Even Al Qaeda Tried To Free Alan Henning

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 04 Oktober 2014 | 22.55

A filmmaker, who was involved in the early negotiations to free Alan Henning, has told Sky News how even al Qaeda thought holding him hostage was "not a good idea".

The terrorist group sent a member to bargain with the Islamic State fighters holding him but failed to secure his release.

The al Qaeda member, who was sent to bargain with the Manchester taxi driver's captors, said the jihadists were "difficult" and "tough".

Bilal Abdul Kareem told how Mr Henning, who was helping to make an aid delivery in Syria, was captured just an hour after arriving in al-Dana, around 30 minutes from the Turkish border, on Boxing Day.

He said Islamic State fighters had arrived in the town and detained all of those in the convoy but quickly released the Muslim members, holding only Mr Henning.

Mr Kareem said when Mr Henning was first taken he was set to be released later that day or even the next but when that did not happen people started to worry.

Then the jihadists claimed the 47-year-old, father-of-two as their prisoner and said they were planning to exchange him for people in British custody.

Mr Kareem said: "They had a course of action that they were going to take and nobody was going to be able to talk them out of it.

"Even al Qaeda affiliates al Nusra went there to talk to them because nobody outside of ISIS thought this was a good idea, nobody thought that it was OK to do this, none of the other groups were doing that, nobody thought it was a good idea.

"When the al Qaeda representative went to go down and try to talk to them he returned, his face was different, he said something to the effect these guys are really being difficult, really being tough but they did say that they were going to release him.

"Everybody was anticipating that but that never happened."

On Friday the terrorists posted a video of Mr Henning's killing. In it he is pictured kneeling in front of a masked man, who speaks with a British accent and is believed to be the man responsible for previous beheadings.

The man makes a direct appeal to David Cameron saying: "The blood of David Haines was on your hands, Cameron. Alan Henning will also be slaughtered, but his blood is on the hands of the British Parliament."

Muslim leaders have condemned the beheading on the eve of the Muslim festival of Eid Al-Adha, which represents a day of mercy, and said they want to see justice done.

Alice Gross: Body Found In Hunt For Suspect

Police hunting for a Latvian man suspected of murdering teenager Alice Gross have found a body.

Convicted killer Arnis Zalkalns is the prime suspect in the disappearance of the 14-year-old, who was found dead in the River Brent on Tuesday, following an extensive search.

An area of Boston Manor Park in west London, has been cordoned off - a mile from where Alice's body was discovered.

Zalkalns was filmed cycling along the same route behind Alice on the day she failed to return to her home in Hanwell on 28 August.

He was reported as missing just days later.

Video: CCTV Footage Shows Alice Suspect

The 41-year-old worked at a building site in Isleworth, west London, and is thought to have come to the UK in 2007.

Authorities faced criticism for apparently holding no record of his conviction for bludgeoning and stabbing his wife Rudite to death in Latvia.

It also emerged Zalkalns was arrested in London on suspicion of indecent assault on a 14-year-old girl in 2009, but was never charged.

Police had warned he "clearly poses a risk to the public" and urged anyone who saw him not to approach him.

Alice was last seen on CCTV walking along the Grand Union Canal towards Hanwell at 4.26pm on August 28.

Her disappearance sparked a huge police search - the Met's largest since the 7/7 bombings.

Hundreds of officers from several forces around the country were involved in the investigation, while the RAF was also drafted in to help identify new search areas.

She was found dead more than five weeks after disappearing.

Launching a murder hunt, police said  "significant efforts" were taken to conceal her body in the water.

Zalkalns had not accessed his bank account or used his mobile phone since September 3, nor had he returned home to his partner and young child.

He also left behind his passport.

Forensic officers searched his semi-detached house in Ealing, as part of their investigation.

Alan Henning's Family 'Numb With Grief'

The family of Alan Henning have paid tribute to a "decent, caring human being" after he was murdered by Islamic State (IS), saying they are devastated.

In a statement they thanked those who campaigned for his release, saying they had comfort "knowing how many people stood beside us in hoping for the best".

"There are few words to describe how we feel at this moment. Myself, Lucy and Adam, and all of Alan's family and friends are numb with grief," the statement said.

Support from the Government, Foreign Office and Greater Manchester Police "meant that we were able to get through the most awful of times", the family said.

The statement went on to add: "His interest was in the welfare of others.

"He will be remembered for this and we as a family are extremely proud of him and what he achieved and the people he helped."

David Cameron earlier vowed to do "everything we can" to "hunt down" Mr Henning's killers.

Mr Cameron had met officials from the Foreign Office, intelligence agencies and the military at Chequers, his official country residence.

The PM said: "We will use all the assets we have as we have been up to now to try and find these hostages, to try and help these hostages, to help their families and do everything we can to defeat this organisation which is utterly ruthless, senseless and barbaric in the way it treats people."

Mr Cameron also paid tribute to Mr Henning, the second Briton to be beheaded by IS, for his "kindness, peacefulness and gentleness".

Labour leader Ed Miliband said: "We will do everything we can to support the efforts of the Government to bring those guilty of this terrible act to justice."

A video lasting one minute and 11 seconds and titled Another Message To America And Its Allies, was posted on YouTube on Friday.

It shows Mr Henning, a taxi-driver who was captured on an aid mission in Syria in December 2013, kneeling in front of a knife-wielding militant in a desert setting before being beheaded in front of the camera.

Mr Henning, who is dressed in red, says: "I am Alan Henning. Because of our Parliament's decision to attack the Islamic State, I, as a member of the British public, will now pay the price for that decision."

The masked killer, who speaks with a British accent and is believed to be the man responsible for previous beheadings, makes a direct statement to Mr Cameron: "The blood of David Haines was on your hands, Cameron. Alan Henning will also be slaughtered, but his blood is on the hands of the British Parliament."

Last week MPs voted to join the US-led coalition and take part in airstrikes against IS fighters in Iraq.

At the end of the video another hostage, a former US soldier turned charity worker believed to be Peter Edward Kassig, is paraded in front of the cameras. The militant in the video says Mr Kassig will be the next victim.

American Hostage's Parents Issue Video Plea

By Sky News US Team

The parents of American hostage Abdul-Rahman Kassig, formerly known as Peter, have issued a video plea asking for his safe return.

Mr Kassig appeared at the end of a clip posted online on Friday that showed the killing of British aid worker Alan Henning by Islamic State militants.

Ed and Paula Kassig pleaded with their son's captors "to show mercy and use their power" to let him go.

Mrs Kassig, speaking directly to her son, added: "Most of all, know that we love you, and our hearts ache for you to be granted your freedom so we can hug you again and then set you free to continue the life you have chosen, the life of service to those in greatest need."

Peter Kassig changed his name to Abdul-Rahman after years of humanitarian work in the region "culminated in him embracing Islam", his father said.

Ed Kassig said his son "grew to love and admire the Syrian people and felt at home there".

A family spokesman said Mr Kassig's faith "has provided him comfort during his long captivity".

The 26-year-old Indiana native and Iraqi War veteran was captured by IS militants on October 1 while en route to Deir Ezzor in eastern Syria.

HMS Defender Joins US Fight With Islamic State

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 03 Oktober 2014 | 22.55

One of the Royal Navy's most advanced warships is supporting US forces as they launch airstrikes against Islamic State militants.

HMS Defender is using its hi-tech air defence weapons to protect US Navy aircraft carrier USS George HW Bush and her aircraft as they carry out bombing missions against IS targets, the Ministry of Defence said.

The Portsmouth-based Type 45 destroyer is using its air defence radar and Sea Viper missile system as part of an "umbrella" of support for the Nimitz class aircraft carrier and its escort ships as they patrol the Gulf.

The ship was deployed to the Gulf in June 2014, tasked with conducting maritime security operations throughout the Middle East and as far south as the coast of Somalia, where pirates have caused chaos with hijackings and kidnappings.

It is now operating with the US navy's Arleigh-Burke class destroyers USS Truxton and USS Roosevelt and the Ticonderoga class destroyer USS Philippine Sea to provide support for the USS George HW Bush.

Engaged in round-the-clock operations, HMS Defender's task is to build an accurate air surveillance picture over the whole of the Gulf in order to guard the US aircraft carrier against possible air attack.

Royal Navy Commander Phil Nash, Defender's commanding officer, said: "As an air defence destroyer, HMS Defender was built for exactly the sort of tasking that we are conducting in support of the USS George HW Bush.

"Since we arrived in the Gulf in June, we have been engaged in exercises with navies from around the world to test our air defence capabilities and I am delighted that my ship's company now have an opportunity to put into practice the training they have received over the past few months.

Video: First RAF Airstrikes Against IS

"This will be our primary role in the future, so to be able to provide the same defensive shield to a US Navy aircraft carrier that we will deliver as part of a British carrier strike group is an excellent chance to prove the value we can add in a national and international environment."

The UK has already committed Royal Air Force fighter bombers to carry out reconnaissance missions and air strikes in Iraq.

Visiting troops at Camp Bastion in Afghanistan, David Cameron has warned that the fight against Islamist extremism will continue for many years.

Hunger Games Stunt Double Dies In Parkour Fall

A stunt double who has worked on films such as The Hunger Games: Catching Fire has died after attempting a parkour jump at a hostel in Lisbon.

Carlos Lopez IV is reported to have been trying to jump from his fourth floor window to a balcony at the Goodnight Hostel in the Portuguese capital.

The martial arts expert, from North Carolina in the US, died from injuries sustained after falling to the ground.

He is thought to have been staying at the hostel with his girlfriend.

A neighbour told Portuguese local media she had "never seen so much blood".

"I woke up with the noise, went to the window and saw the young man lying on the ground, on an interior patio we share with the hostel where it happened," said 77-year-old Natercia Gama.

Lopez, 25, has worked on a number of Hollywood films including this summer's blockbusters Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and 22 Jump Street.

Tributes have been paid to the stunt performer on Facebook.

His friend Gabe Hansen wrote: "Three months ago I met a kid in Jersey City, he took me in, gave me a place to stay, he became my training partner, my teammate, my roommate, my little brother, he was selfless, humble to a fault, his heart was pure gold.

"Thank you Carlos for sharing the love with me. It's still hard to believe you would leave, but it was your time, it's not the end...See you soon brother."

Tony Vo wrote: "I still can't believe this ... I won't ever forget the times we trained together, you will always be here with us Carlos."

According to his IMDB page, Lopez was working on a new film called The Nest which stars Tina Fey and Amy Poehler and is due for release next year.

Parkour is a popular urban sport which involves trying to get from place to place by any means possible, including jumping, swinging and climbing over buildings.

A representative from the Goodnight Hostel told Sky News they are very sorry for what has happened and will issue a statement once they have permission from the Portuguese police.

Hostage John Cantlie's Father Pleads With IS

The father of a Briton being held by Islamic State militants has tried to contact the group in an appeal for the freedom of his son, who he describes as a "good man".

Speaking from his hospital bed, Paul Cantlie said he could not think of a "greater joy than seeing my dear son released and allowed to return home to us".

"My family and I are trying to communicate with the Islamic State to deliver an important message regarding John and can only hope that it has been received as we have had no response," he said.

"To those holding John: please know that he is a good man, he sought only to help the Syrian people and I ask you from all that is sacred, to help us and allow him to return home safely to those he loves and who love him."

Footage of the journalist, dressed in orange and sitting behind a desk as he spoke to the camera, was released by his captors last month.

In the video - the first of a series - he said he wanted "to convey some facts" which "if you contemplate might help preserving lives".

Video: Barbara Henning's Desperate IS Plea

Mr Cantlie said the Western media "tries to drag the public back ... to another war" with IS.

His father said the video released by IS was the first time in almost two years the family had seen him.

"As a family we experienced great relief seeing and hearing John and knowing that he is alive. This was followed by the feeling of despair and helplessness," he said.

The 43-year-old was seized in northern Syria in 2012, where he had been working as an independent photojournalist.

His father said he was "seeking out the true story of the suffering of the Syrian people and ensuring the world was made aware of their plight".

"John felt a strong need to help in the best way that he could: as an impartial and respected journalist he knew that he could make a difference by acting as a platform for the world to listen to and take notice, using his journalistic skills for the good of the people; as a friend and as a civilian," he said.

"I have had many messages saying they cannot conceive what we, his family and all those who love him, must be feeling.

"Speaking entirely for myself, this is not how I had imagined I would be passing my 81st year.

"I want John to know how very proud I am of him. I can think of no greater joy than seeing my dear son released and allowed to return home to us."

The insurgent group, which controls large parts of Syria and Iraq, has previously killed three western hostages - Briton David Haines and Americans James Foley and Steven Sotloff.

It has also threatened the life of UK aid convoy volunteer Alan Henning.

Hong Kong: Clashes Between Rival Groups

Protesters have said they are calling off talks with the government after clashes with hundreds of supporters of Chinese rule in Hong Kong.

Police were forced to appeal to protesters to remain calm and return to their homes after tensions between the two groups boiled over.

Hundreds of pro-Beijing supporters had ripped up banners, destroyed tents and thrown water bottles at the pro-democracy protesters in Mong Kok.

Protest leaders urged their supporters to leave the Mong Kok area for their own safety but hundreds ignored the plea and descended on the area to outnumber the counter-protesters.

Officers formed a human chain to keep the two groups apart, with some pro-democracy protesters reportedly throwing objects as some members of the pro-China group were led away by bus.

It was unclear whether the pro-China protesters were an organised group but they were said to be visibly older than pro-democracy group and yelled, shoved and tried to drag the younger protesters away. Many shouted their anger that the protesters were preventing them from going to work and earning a living.

"Give us Mong Kok back, we Hong Kongers need to eat!" one man shouted as he attempted to remove the barricades.

Video: Clashes Erupt At Hong Kong Protests

One young female protester said: "We're sorry for the inconvenient cause but we hope you can show consideration."

She said she was determined to stay, adding: "Yes I do (have safety worries) but I don't have other choice."

A woman on the other side said: "My father lives here and I come here to buy things but the shops are closed and the roads are closed and everybody cannot go to work. I completely respect their rights to express their views but I just think Hong Kong is not such a place where you have to occupy roads or create such a tension between people to express their views."

The scuffles were the most chaotic since police used tear gas and pepper spray last weekend to try to disperse protesters pushing for greater electoral reforms for the territory.

In Causeway Bay, another area under student occupation, groups of young men in face masks were forced away from the protesters by police.

  6. Police officers try to get a man to let go of a fence guarded by pro-democracy demonstrators

  7. The protests are about to enter their second week

Police spokesman Steve Hui appealed to the members of the public to "observe the laws of Hong Kong when they are expressing their views."

Protesters, who are mostly students, said that if authorities did not act to protect peaceful demonstrators, they would go back on an agreement to hold talks with the city government as proposed by Hong Kong's leader, Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying.

Tens of thousands took to the streets of Hong Kong a week ago to demand democracy in the former British colony, the main issue being a free voting system to choose their new leader in 2017.

Numbers have recently dwindled, however, as people returned to work following a two-day holiday.

Leung Chun-ying agreed to open talks with pro-democracy protesters on Thursday but has refused the give in to their demands that he resign.

Video: How Protesters Use Social Media

Police had warned protesters of serious consequences if they try to block off government buildings and were pictured unloading of what appeared to be tear gas canisters and rubber bullets on Thursday.

After the clashes on Friday, the protesters said they would not meet Mr Leung unless the "organised attacks" on their sit-in are stopped.

The protests are the biggest challenge to China's authority since Britain handed control of Hong Kong to Beijing in 1997.

While Leung may have made a concession in offering talks with the students, he gave no timeframe for when these might take place.

Meanwhile, Beijing has signalled its opposition to the protests with a front-page commentary in the country's official People's Daily.

Video: Hong Kong Leader Offers Talks

"For a few consecutive days, some people have been making trouble in Hong Kong, stirring up illegal assemblies in the name of seeking 'real universal suffrage'."

"Such acts have outrightly violated the Basic Law, Hong Kong's law, as well as the principle of the rule of law, and they are doomed to fail."

Alice Gross: What We Know About Murder Suspect

The hunt for the prime suspect in the disappearance of Alice Gross will intensify after the discovery of a body by police.

Arnis Zalkalns, a Latvian builder who was jailed in his native country after murdering his wife, was filmed on CCTV cycling along a path by the Grand Union Canal where the 14-year-old was last seen on August 28.

And police searching for Alice have now launched a murder inquiry after finding a body in the River Brent, West London.

Detectives believe Zalkalns is likely to have seen Alice, and have been working with their counterparts in his native country of Latvia to track down the labourer, who was reported missing within days of the teenager's disappearance.

The 41-year-old has not accessed his bank account or used his mobile phone since September 3, nor has he returned home to his partner and young child.

He also left behind his passport.

Forensic officers have searched his semi-detached house in Ealing, West London.

Zalkalns, who worked at a building site in Isleworth, West London, is thought to have come to the UK in 2007.

Authorities here have faced criticism for apparently holding no record of his conviction for bludgeoning and stabbing his wife Rudite to death in Latvia.

According to reports in his home country, he buried his spouse in a forest after murdering her following a dispute about her sexuality.

There have been conflicting reports as to whether he was subsequently jailed for seven or eight years.

It has also emerged Zalkalns was arrested in London on suspicion of indecent assault on a 14-year-old girl in 2009, but was never charged.

Video: Alice Gross Suspect's Home Searched

Police have admitted they they have no power to arrest him if he has managed to flee abroad.

Commander Graham McNulty said the force would need to be "charge ready" to apply for a European Arrest Warrant, and has not done so because this would stop officers being able to interview the suspect.

Police have warned he "clearly poses a risk to the public" and anyone who sees him is urged not to approach him.

PM Pledges Tax Cut For Millions Of Families

David Cameron has promised to raise the 40p tax threshold to £50,000 if the Tories win another five years in power.

The pledge, which would help thousands of middle income earners, was among an array of sweeteners offered by Mr Cameron in his last conference speech before the General Election.

He vowed to balance the nation's books by 2018 so he could deliver tax cuts for "hard-working families", including lifting the tax-free allowance from £10,500 to £12,500.

The PM said it would mean a tax cut for 30 million people and that those on the national minimum wage working a 30-hour week would pay "nothing, zero, zilch" in income tax.

Video: Cameron On Basic Rate Tax

He also said he would increase the 40p tax rate from £41,900 to £50,000.

Mr Cameron attempted to paint a picture of the Tories as the champion of the ordinary man and families.

He said he wanted a Britain where there was: "the chance of a job, a home, a good start in life, whoever you are, wherever you're from. And by the way, you never pull one person up by pulling other people down."

Video: Cameron On 40p Tax Rate

He added: "We believe in aspiration and helping people get on in life and what's more, we're proud of it."

Shadow chancellor Ed Balls accused Mr Cameron of attempting to "pull the wool over people's eyes" by promising a tax cut without explaining how it would be paid for.

Simon Walker, director general of the Institute of Directors, said: "We await the details of how such reforms will be financed. Increasing the personal allowance is particularly expensive to the Exchequer."

Video: Cameron Does Hague Impression

The Prime Minister went on to make a fierce defence of his handling of the NHS, saying he intended to take the health service back for the Tories after Labour's attempt to claim it with a £12.5bn spending pledge at the party's conference last week.

He accused Labour of "spreading complete and utter lies" by suggesting he was selling off the NHS and said: "How dare they suggest I would put that at risk for other people's children?"

Mr Cameron has spoke of his first-hand experience of the NHS during the care of his son, Ivan, who died in 2009 at the age of six, bringing tears to the eyes of his wife, Samantha, who was sitting in the audience.

Video: 'UK Jihadists Enemies Of The State'

He said Labour did not understand that the country "can only have a strong NHS if you have a strong economy".

The Conservative Party leader also said he would scrap the Human Rights Act, which has allowed the courts in Strasbourg to rule Britain must give prisoners the vote, and introduce a British Bill of Rights.

Identifying problems with the free movement of people in the EU, Mr Cameron highlighted a number of things he was keen to change.

  2. But of course Boris and Dave are close - as they proved with this touching stroll together

  3. It was not Mr Cameron but Ed Miliband who was the butt of most jokes. The best one was the one about him forgetting to mention the deficit in his keynote address to the Labour Party Conference last week

  4. It shifted some merchandise such as this hilariously named beer

  5. George Osborne started it in his speech, during which he invited voters to choose Dave, choose the Conservatives and choose the future

  6. But it did make him sound like Renton from Trainspotting. Everyone thought so

  7. Nigel Farage was the spectre at the feast. Four defections to UKIP - one MP, a donor and two others since the conference began

  8. The PM prepared for his big speech by asking delegates what they thought of him by posting message boards around the conference in Birmingham

  9. And spent some time with Samantha, his wife

  10. He posed for selfies with delegates

  11. And did not miss a hard hat, high-vis opportunity

  12. He was photographed memorising the chapter on the deficit ... in glasses and Union flag cufflinks ...

  13. ... as he prepared for the crowds in the main hall

  14. Where he gave some money away - tax cuts for the "hard-working"

  15. Got really cross about the NHS

  16. Then got clapped quite a lot

  17. Still, the Conservatives concluded that what Britain needs is an iron lady ...

  18. ...and here's Home Secretary Theresa May

"Britain: I know you want this sorted, so I will go to Brussels, I will not take no for an answer and when it comes to free movement I will get what Britain needs," he said.

Mr Cameron's speech brings to a close a conference which has been tarnished by four UKIP "defections", the most significant of which was the MP Mark Reckless.

The Prime Minister warned that a vote for UKIP was a vote for Labour. He said: "On the 7th of May, go to bed with Nigel Farage and wake up with Ed Miliband. I don't know about you, but not a bit of that works for me."

PM Parks Austerity In Favour Of Prosperity

No memorised speeches for this Prime Minister. A giant lectern. Autocue. And he was never going to forget his promise of a whopping tax cut.

This has been a long time in the planning. Indeed the tough front-loaded austerity programme was always going to end like this: a pre-election tax cut. It is the well-trodden Conservative strategy.

But this speech was more than that.

It was a parking of austerity in favour of prosperity.

David Cameron was spending some of George Osborne's hard-won fiscal credibility.

Video: Analysis of Cameron's Speech

In essence, freezing benefits on Monday helps you offer an unfunded £7bn tax cut for 30 million at some yet-to-be-specified time before 2020.

The millions of beneficiaries - a million on minimum wage taken out of tax, 800,000 higher earners removed from the 40% rate - will just have to take David Cameron at his word. But it might take four years.

In order to get that hearing on the economy and win that trust of centre ground voters, the PM knows he needs to neutralise the mistrust of the Conservatives on the NHS.

Video: Cameron On 40p Tax Rate

There was a powerful personal rebuttal to Ed Miliband about Labour's election message of "saving the NHS" from "Tory privatisation".

"How dare they?" question his sincerity on the health service, given, among other things, the tragic experience of his late son, Ivan.

No surprise that cabinet colleagues such as George Osborne and other delegates were lauding this as Mr Cameron's best-ever speech.

Video: Cameron On Basic Rate Tax

The Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond looked close to ecstasy that Mr Cameron had finally dealt with fiscal drag - raising the threshold of the 40p rate of tax up to £50,000 by 2020.

A party that can now imagine a world no longer constrained by coalition

The week started badly for the Camerons. It was always going to get better. The battleground: the NHS, the economy and leadership.

But despite conference confidence, so much of this depends on public trust in one man. David Cameron himself.

Hong Kong: China Warns UK Not To 'Interfere'

Written By Unknown on Senin, 29 September 2014 | 22.55

Thousands of democracy protesters have defied tear gas and police baton charges to remain on the streets of Hong Kong amid rising international tensions.

Some demonstrators wore masks and resorted to umbrellas or plastic wrap to protect themselves - prompting the phrase "umbrella revolution" to trend on social media.

The UK Foreign Office said it was "concerned" by the heavy response to the protests in its former colony - but China warned the international community not to "interfere".

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hua Chunying said: "Hong Kong is China's Hong Kong. Hong Kong is purely our internal affair.

"We are resolutely opposed to any foreign country using any method to interfere in China's internal affairs."

Pro Democracy Supporters Protesters remained defiant on Monday night Pro Democracy Supporters Some wore plastic and goggles, fearing more tear gas

The Hong Kong government said it withdrew riot police on Monday as the protests began to calm.

A spokesman called on the activists to leave the protest areas peacefully - but many remain camped on a normally busy highway near the government headquarters.

Organisers estimate as many as 80,000 people have taken to the streets since Friday.

Police began throwing tear gas canisters on Sunday.

The Hong Kong government said 26 people had been taken to hospital.

Demonstrator Rick Chan shouted at police: "We're only carrying umbrellas."

"I came last night and saw police fire many rounds of tear gas at the crowd, who were mostly young students and even included some old people," he said. "I feel it was extremely unnecessary."

Photo-sharing site Instagram has also reportedly been blocked in China, suggesting authorities could be worried about inspiring similar protests on the mainland.

Many photos of the demo have been hashtagged "Occupy Central".

The phrase was blocked on Sunday on Weibo, China's version of Twitter.

A movement to occupy central Hong Kong, in protest at Chinese interference, was originally planned for National Day on Wednesday, but began early on the back of separate student protests.

Last month, the Communist Party ruled that while Hong Kongers could choose their next leader or chief executive in 2017, they must select from candidates picked by Beijing who must declare their "love" for China and its Communist system.

Under the agreement of the 1997 handover from Britain to China, Hong Kong was allowed to have an independent legal and political framework.

Unlike mainland China, protests are allowed - but the current demonstrations are one of the biggest political challenges to Beijing since the Tiananmen Square crackdown 25 years ago.

China has endorsed the Hong Kong government's crackdown.

But a spokesman for the UK Foreign Office said: "The British government is concerned about the situation in Hong Kong and is monitoring events carefully.

"It is Britain's longstanding position, as a co-signatory of the Sino-British Joint Declaration, that Hong Kong's prosperity and security are underpinned by its fundamental rights and freedoms, including the right to demonstrate."

Occupy Central co-organiser Dr Chan Kin-man urged "fearless" protesters to remain on the streets until their calls were heeded.

In a statement, the group called on Hong Kong's Chief Executive, Leung Chun-ying, to resign, saying his "non-response to the people's demands has driven Hong Kong into a crisis of disorder".

The protests have affected Hong Kong's commercial hub, forcing bus routes to be cancelled or diverted and banks to close.

Clashes also broke out in Taiwan when dozens of students gathered in the lobby of the Hong Kong Trade Office in Taipei in support of the democracy protests.

Choose Slogans: Osborne's Trainspotting Speech

By Anushka Asthana, Political Correspondent

George Osborne invited voters to choose a number of things during his conference speech, Anushka Asthana takes a look.

It was all a bit Trainspotting when the Chancellor rounded off with a list of things to choose, including the Tories and David Cameron. Here's what you can choose from Mr Osborne's Speech.

:: Choose the Future

General Boles on Twitter Choose the Tories on Twitter by General Boles

The Chancellor sought to present Labour as the party of a past mired in economic incompetence, high risk in the banking sector and ruin. He even named the downturn that started in 2007 as "Labour's Great Recession" - one for the history books.

It's a pretty smart move: they made it bad, we are making it better, it's not yet, but the future will be great… unless you vote Labour back in. Basically the "long-term plan is working".

To sum-up he chose the phrase "choose the future" - on the end of a big list of things for voters to choose from, which totally made him sound like Renton from Trainspotting, you know, the one played by Ewan McGregor, who says: "Choose Life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family..."

:: Choose Pensions

Members of Age Concern lunch club One for the older voter

Abolish the 55% "death tax" for pension pots. One for the elderly voter, who is demographically the most likely to switch to UKIP and does not want to leave their hard-earned pension savings to the tax man. However, don't forget it will also please those in their 30s and 40s, especially middle income earners who are feeling the pinch, hoping the inheritance might get them out of a hole and looking to the future for their children.

:: Choose Work

Benefits Street White Dee: Life is about to get tougher on Benefits Street

A two-year freeze on working age benefits. This is one that will chime with "working hard Britain" and those low to middle income earners who are struggling with the rising cost of living. Mr Osborne's words "families out of work should not get more than the average family in work" will chime with a number of voters whose wages have failed to keep pace with inflation.

It will present a £3bn saving but the Chancellor has warned there are £9bn more of welfare cuts on their way and the sobriquet "the nasty party" is never far away.

:: Choose Together

George Osborne at a Warburtons bakery 'Really we are all in this together'

"We're all in this together." This phrase has been parked for a bit but he's brought it back. There's a new slant on it, mind. This time the "togetherness" of us is what has helped us turn corners make a recovery and get Britain back on track. As a nation "together" we fought back and dragged ourselves off the floor, etc.

The "together" was all Ed Miliband could talk about last week, but if the swing to UKIP tells politicians anything it's that voters are not feeling the "together".

Nigel Farage is on to something when he talks about voters disillusioned with a ruling political elite for whom hardship does not mean defaulting on the mortgage payment, losing your job/family/mental health.

:: Choose to Mention The Deficit

Labour Leader Ed Miliband Gives His Keynote Speech At the Annual Party Conference Hush. Not another word about the deficit

It was an open goal. Not to score would have been a shocker. In fairness, he did it well. "Ed Miliband made a pitch for office that was so forgettable he forgot it himself." Ho, ho. It was the only humour in an otherwise patrician speech.

The Tories are putting the economy at the centre of their election battle, that much is clear. Mr Miliband has offered it on a plate by entirely omitting the deficit from his speech.

:: Choose the NHS

UNISON Members Form A Human Pyramid As Protest Against Foundation Hospitals It's my NHS, no it's my NHS

"The real party of the NHS is in this hall today." Both Labour and the Conservatives appear to have adopted a "core voter strategy" - ie they are preaching to the converted. Labour is reinforcing its standing as the "party of the NHS", while the Conservatives are continuing to paint themselves as the party of business and the guardians of the economy.

So far so obvious but actually Mr Osborne made a valiant attempt to take the NHS on his own terms. His argument: no recovery, no robust economy; no money for the health service.

Labour would ruin the economy, therefore the NHS - and should not be trusted with either. A pretty robust comeback to Labour's claims last week.

Osborne: 'Raise The Ambition Of The Nation'

UKIP Defections: PM Did Too Little, Too Late

Updated: 10:09pm UK, Saturday 27 September 2014

By Anushka Asthana, Political Correspondent

During the 2010 election, I travelled to Rochester and Strood in Kent, where I met the Tory candidate Mark Reckless.

One thing that struck me as I watched him take to the doorsteps, was the number of constituents raising the issue of immigration.

One awkward incident involved an elderly man ranting about why he supported the far-right National Front. Mr Reckless backed off, embarrassed.

He certainly didn't share those extreme views. But it was clear then that he was a politician who was worried about immigration and angry about Europe.

I remember another conversation with Mr Reckless last year in the Commons.

Tory backbenchers were nervous about immigration, he told me. They felt David Cameron hadn't done enough, and the looming prospect of transitional controls lifted on Bulgarians and Romanians was of particular concern.

Things could get tetchy in January 2015, he said.

Mr Cameron knew about these misgivings among his MPs and tried to act on them.

Late last year he unveiled a toughening up in the rhetoric on immigration – bringing in new rules to crack down on the access that new EU migrants would get to benefits. Then came the pledge of an EU referendum.

The hope was to appease the concerns of people like Mr Reckless, and you might have thought it was working.

After all, following the defection to UKIP of Douglas Carswell many asked the MP if he would be next. He insisted not.

When I texted Tracey Crouch, a neighbouring MP in Kent, about his decision to leave the Tories, she replied: "Nothing I can say right now would be becoming of a lady. I'm so angry. He looked me in the eye and promised he wasn't going to defect."

Others pointed out that he was openly supportive of the Conservatives as recently as yesterday.

Then he tweeted: "Good to lead coach for Team2015 campaigning in Birmingham Northfield on Sunday + will be followed by our Clacton action next Thursday."

That is why Tory sources say they are "surprised". Other MPs told me they felt "let down", "frustrated" and "fed up".

"Another battle when we should be fighting Labour," said one.

Others argued that although he had behaved irresponsibly, giving a leg-up to Ed Miliband, that a number of backbenchers were angry with the party's position on Europe.

They believe that Mr Cameron hasn't done enough to prove he can loosen Britain's ties to the EU. They want to see the issue addressed at his conference speech this week.

The problem for men like Mr Reckless is they don't share the Prime Minister's views on Europe.

Mr Cameron wants to reform the UK's relationship with the continent and then – ideally – campaign for us to stay IN.

And that is the sticking point with Mr Reckless.

The former Tory MP was clear today that he believes in an independent Britain, and wants to follow the Scotland Yes campaign with what he said was a positive, patriotic message for voters.

He wants OUT – and UKIP is the only party that is fully with him.

Dave Lee Travis' Sentence To Be Reviewed

DJ Dave Lee Travis' three-month suspended sentence for indecent assault has been referred to the Attorney General's Office.

Four members of the public have complained about the sentence and the Office will now look at claims the term was "unduly lenient".

The former Radio 1 star walked free from court despite being found guilty of groping a young researcher behind the scenes at The Mrs Merton Show.

He was sentenced to three months in prison suspended for two years by judge Anthony Leonard QC at London's Southwark Crown Court on Friday.

A spokesman for the Attorney General's Office said: "The case has been referred to us under the unduly lenient sentence scheme."

Farage's Trip To UKIP Defector Seat Cut Short

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 28 September 2014 | 22.56

UKIP defector Mark Reckless has been forced to cut short a visit to his constituency by his new party leader Nigel Farage after the pair received a hostile reception.

A planned walkabout in Rochester, Kent, was cancelled after Mr Reckless was confronted with tough questions from members of the media and the public, said Sky's Darren McCaffrey.

The former Conservative was also met by ex-party colleagues as he visited a pub in his Rochester and Strood constituency with Mr Farage.

Shortly after TV cameras filmed the pair sitting down having a drink, they were seen having a private discussion in the pub.

Mr Farage then left in a car, while Mr Reckless made his exit through a side door, McCaffrey reported.

The MP, who was elected in 2010, headed to his nearby constituency office, where he was said to be doing paperwork.

Conservatives have slammed Mr Reckless' move, which he revealed at UKIP's party conference in Doncaster on Saturday.

David Cameron called it "counterproductive and senseless", while Tracey Crouch, MP for nearby Chatham and Aylesford, said she had received assurances from Mr Reckless that he would not defect.

But speaking to Sky News in The Crown pub before the visit was curtailed, Mr Farage denied his party's latest recruit had been dishonest.

He said: "We've had conversations over a period of time. He finally made his mind up yesterday that he was going to do it. There's no problem with that.

"And after all, he hasn't changed his policies."

Mr Reckless was asked about remarks by Tory party chairman Grant Shapps, who said he had "lied and lied and lied again".

"He would say that wouldn't he, Mr Reckless said.

"What I'm concerned about is keeping faith with my constituents and the promises I made to them in 2010; to cut immigration, deal with the deficit, reform our political system.

"You can't discuss these things in advance, but what you can do is look at what you promised at the last election and if your party isn't delivering o it, switch to a party who will."

As he walked down the high street later, Mr Reckless denied the visit had been cut short.

"We did a walkabout before," he told McCaffrey.

"We had planned to start at 12, but in the end we started at 11 and did a walkabout first."

Mr Reckless and Mr Farage had an impromptu walkabout before the pub photo call, but another one was scheduled after that.

Sex Scandal And Defection Hit Tory Conference

The Conservatives have been dealt a devastating double blow after a minister quit over a sex scandal and another party MP announced he was defecting to UKIP.

Cabinet Office minister Brooks Newmark resigned after reportedly sending explicit pictures of himself online to an undercover tabloid newspaper reporter.

His announcement came just hours after Rochester and Strood MP Mark Reckless declared he was joining UKIP leader Nigel Farage's "people's army".

Meanwhile, an opinion poll in the Sunday Mirror and Independent on Sunday suggests Mr Farage is more popular than Prime Minister David Cameron.

Mr Reckless is the second Conservative to defect to UKIP within a month, joining Clacton MP Douglas Carswell.

Speaking on the BBC's The Andrew Marr show on Sunday, the PM said it was "counterproductive and senseless".

Mr Reckless was forced to cut short a visit to his constituency by his new party leader on Sunday after local Conservatives angry at his defection turned up and he received hostile questions from members of the public.

It comes as the Conservative Party's conference got under way in Birmingham.

It was opened by party chairman Grant Shapps, who said voters, activists and donors had been "betrayed" by Mr Reckless.

Day Two - UKIP Holds Its Annual Party Conference The UKIP leader could not contain his delight at the Tory MP's defection

He said he had "lied, lied, and lied again".

The setbacks overshadowed the announcement of plans for a new squeeze on benefits to fund millions of new apprenticeships.

According to the Sunday Mirror, Mr Newmark allegedly exchanged explicit pictures over the internet with a female reporter posing as a Tory PR worker.

The 56-year-old married father of five tendered his resignation after learning that the newspaper was about to publish details of their exchanges.

He said on Sunday: "I have been a complete fool. I have no one to blame but myself. I have hurt those I care about most. I am so, so sorry. But I just need time with my family."

Downing Street said that Reading East MP Rob Wilson had been appointed the new Civil Society Minister.

Mr Reckless received an ecstatic reception from UKIP activists at their party conference in Doncaster after he declared he was leaving the Tories.

He accused the leadership of failing to keep its promises on Europe, the economy and immigration.

"People feel ignored, taken for granted, over-taxed, over-regulated, ripped off and lied to," he declared.

He dismissed the PM's promise of an in/out EU referendum as a "device" designed to deliver the "pre-ordained" result in favour of Britain's continued membership.

MP Brooks Newmark resigns Brooks Newmark resigned over claims he sent explicit photos

There was deep anger in the Conservative ranks at Mr Reckless' move, with a party spokesman denouncing the defection as "completely illogical".

Mr Reckless' constituency party chairman, Andrew Mackness, said that he was "astonished and disgusted" at the decision, and said he had been given assurances by Mr Reckless that he would not defect.

Like Mr Carswell, Mr Reckless said that he would be standing down as an MP in order to fight the seat as a UKIP candidate in a by-election.

Although he took the Kent constituency with a majority of almost 10,000 at the last general election, he may face a tough battle to return to Westminster.

'Nothing Token' About Britain's Iraq Mission

Defence Secretary Michael Fallon has rejected claims Britain's role in the fight against Islamic State (IS) is a "token" gesture, as he confirmed RAF Tornados are now flying daily over northern Iraq.

He told Sky's Murnaghan programme the United States welcomes the contribution of six aircraft to the mission.

Mr Fallon said: "There's nothing token about this. On the contrary, I spoke to the American Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel immediately after the vote and he welcomed the contribution that we're now able to make.

Watch full coverage on Sky News.

"They need our help, not simply with the Tornados, which are now flying daily from Cyprus, but also from the surveyance aircraft that we have overhead and very sophisticated surveyance and intelligence to add to the operations of Iraqi and Kurdish forces."

His comments come after Richard Williams, a former commanding officer of the SAS who served in Bosnia, Iraq and Afghanistan, wrote in the Independent on Sunday the deployment of RAF bombers was a "military sugar rush" that "risks looking fearful and half-cocked".

Lieutenant Colonel Williams said the sending in of RAF bombers had "taken on a military and political significance out of all proportion to their real military value".

Lord Richards of Herstmonceux, a former head of the UK military who stepped down as chief of the defence staff last year, also told The Sunday Times that a campaign involving ground troops would be needed to crush IS.

The RAF carried out two sorties over Iraq on Saturday after Parliament cleared the way for airstrikes on IS militants in a vote on Friday.

In both missions the Tornado GR4 fighter bombers did not use their weapons, although the Ministry of Defence said "invaluable intelligence" had been gathered using the planes' surveillance equipment.

The jets, which fly in pairs, returned to their base at RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus at the end of their hours-long missions with their weapons payload intact.

Sky's Tom Parmenter, who is at the base, says that two Tornados took off on another mission just after midday on Sunday.

Prime Minister David Cameron has said he also wants to make the case for targeting Syria.

In an interview with the Sunday Times, the Prime Minister revealed he would argue that targeting Syria is both legal and appropriate.

"There are complications but there aren't legal difficulties," he said.

A map showing the location of RAF Akrotiri in relation to Iraq and Syria.

Mr Cameron said he would respond to the challenge thrown down by Ed Miliband to seek a UN resolution supporting attacks in Syria, if only to show that his request is impossible.

"We have to demonstrate to people that we'd like a UN security council resolution but it's very difficult to get one and to demonstrate that what we propose is legal. Attempts have been made but there's the existence of a Russian veto."

Ministers had cautioned not to expect a campaign of "shock and awe" and that after weeks of US airstrikes in the area it could take time to identify new targets.

Mr Cameron insisted the involvement of RAF combat aircraft showed Britain was there to "play our part" in the international coalition being assembled against IS.
