UKIP defector Mark Reckless has been forced to cut short a visit to his constituency by his new party leader Nigel Farage after the pair received a hostile reception.
A planned walkabout in Rochester, Kent, was cancelled after Mr Reckless was confronted with tough questions from members of the media and the public, said Sky's Darren McCaffrey.
The former Conservative was also met by ex-party colleagues as he visited a pub in his Rochester and Strood constituency with Mr Farage.
Shortly after TV cameras filmed the pair sitting down having a drink, they were seen having a private discussion in the pub.
Mr Farage then left in a car, while Mr Reckless made his exit through a side door, McCaffrey reported.
The MP, who was elected in 2010, headed to his nearby constituency office, where he was said to be doing paperwork.
Conservatives have slammed Mr Reckless' move, which he revealed at UKIP's party conference in Doncaster on Saturday.
David Cameron called it "counterproductive and senseless", while Tracey Crouch, MP for nearby Chatham and Aylesford, said she had received assurances from Mr Reckless that he would not defect.
But speaking to Sky News in The Crown pub before the visit was curtailed, Mr Farage denied his party's latest recruit had been dishonest.
He said: "We've had conversations over a period of time. He finally made his mind up yesterday that he was going to do it. There's no problem with that.
"And after all, he hasn't changed his policies."
Mr Reckless was asked about remarks by Tory party chairman Grant Shapps, who said he had "lied and lied and lied again".
"He would say that wouldn't he, Mr Reckless said.
"What I'm concerned about is keeping faith with my constituents and the promises I made to them in 2010; to cut immigration, deal with the deficit, reform our political system.
"You can't discuss these things in advance, but what you can do is look at what you promised at the last election and if your party isn't delivering o it, switch to a party who will."
As he walked down the high street later, Mr Reckless denied the visit had been cut short.
"We did a walkabout before," he told McCaffrey.
"We had planned to start at 12, but in the end we started at 11 and did a walkabout first."
Mr Reckless and Mr Farage had an impromptu walkabout before the pub photo call, but another one was scheduled after that.
