Apple Sued Over iPhone And iPad Storage Space

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 03 Januari 2015 | 22.56

A lawsuit has been filed against Apple, accusing the technology giant of promising more available storage space than it actually delivers in its iPhones, iPads, and iPod touch devices.

The plaintiffs argue that while Apple advertises 16 gigabytes of digital storage on lower price models of gadgets such as iPhones, about a fifth of that is eaten up by the latest operating software.

The percentage of space touted as available for digital content such as photos, video, or music shrinks further on Apple gadgets built with eight gigabytes of storage, it is claimed.

Apple's latest operating system, iOS 8, which was beset with problems when it launched in September, takes up as much as 23.1% of storage capacity on some devices.

The lawsuit is being brought on behalf of two men from Florida, Paul Orshan and Christopher Endara, in a District Court in Northern California.

They also complain that once Apple gadget owners reach limits to data storage, they are prompted to pay monthly fees for digital locker space online at the Californian based-firm's iCloud service.

The lawsuit says: "Using these sharp business tactics, (Apple) gives less storage capacity than advertised, only to offer to sell that capacity in a desperate moment, eg when a consumer is trying to record or take photos at a child or grandchild's recital, basketball game or wedding.

"Each gigabyte of storage Apple shortchanges its customers amounts to approximately 400-500 high resolution photographs."

Lawyers behind the suit are seeking class action status along with punishments that include Apple turning over all profits from sales of gadgets at issue in the case.

Apple has so far declined to comment to the media on the matter.

Apple has been embroiled in countless lawsuits with tech rival Samsung over recent years. The smartphone and tablet makers have accused each other of infringing patents in intellectual property battles around the world.

AirAsia Flight QZ8501 'Not Authorised To Fly'

AirAsia could be banned from offering flights in Indonesia, after it emerged that Flight QZ8501 was not authorised to fly on the day it plunged into the Java Sea.

The company also faces allegations that the pilot did not ask for a weather report from meteorologists before take-off, amid concerns that the Airbus A320 was downed in stormy conditions.

Indonesia's transport ministry has suspended all AirAsia flights between Surabaya and Singapore – the route where the plane went missing in the early hours of 28 December.

The budget airline's other schedules are also under investigation, as it was not permitted to make this journey on Sundays.

It comes as ships searching for the wreckage pinpointed "four big objects" on the seabed, with underwater remote operating vehicles attempting to capture images of the debris.

No survivors have been found from Flight QZ8501, which had 162 people on board, including one Briton. Crucial black boxes revealing what happened in the plane's final few minutes are yet to be found.

On Friday, 21 bodies were recovered from the Java Sea – including two passengers who were still strapped in their seats – taking the number of confirmed victims to 30.

Efforts to recover passengers have been hampered by strong winds and high waves, scattering debris further afield. An emergency slide and exit door were initially discovered, along with cameras and children's food.

"Many of the passengers are believed to be still trapped inside the plane's fuselage and could be discovered soon," one search official said. "God willing, we will complete this operation next week."

The pilot, who had 6,100 flying hours on the A320, had asked to ascend to 38,000ft (11,600m) before contact was lost with air traffic control.

Radar data appears to show that the plane made an "unbelievably" steep climb before it crashed, possibly beyond the capabilities of the aircraft.

On Friday, AirAsia's chief executive Tony Fernandes attended the funeral of one of the flight attendants who lost their lives on Flight QZ8501.

Hundreds of people attended the burial of Khairunisa Haidar Fauzi, which took place in her hometown of Palembang in south Sumatra.

Malta's PM Warns Over Rapist Ched Evans Offer

Malta's Prime Minister has intervened in the controversy over striker Ched Evans after one of the country's football clubs offered the convicted rapist a contract.

Joseph Muscat has urged caution over Hibernians FC signing the former Sheffield United player and Welsh international, who has been shunned by a number of English clubs.

The Maltese PM said footballers are role models, and warned how the decision would reflect both on the club and the country.

His comments come after Hibernians, who are top of the country's domestic league, said they had made an offer to Evans for the remainder of the season.

The 26-year-old had an offer to train with League One United withdrawn in November after his release from prison following strong opposition.

Other English clubs including Tranmere and Oldham also rejected the chance to sign him.

However, Malta's Justice Minister, Owen Bonnici, argued he should be given "a second chance".

He tweeted: "If we believe in rehabilitation of ex-prisoners we should practise what we preach."

Club vice-president Stephen Vaughan, the controversial former Chester City owner, told Sky News: "The bottom line is Ched Evans has been punished for previous misdemeanours.

"We are looking for a centre-forward that can find the back of the net, and we believe Ched Evans fits the bill."

Mr Vaughan, who was disqualified from acting as a company director for 11 years in 2009 for his involvement in an alleged £500,000 VAT fraud and was jailed in 2011 for attacking a police officer, said he was "very confident" of doing a deal to sign Evans.

"If someone offers you a cheap Ferrari, you're going to drive it," Mr Vaughan said.

However, a statement issued by the office of the Maltese PM said: "Footballers are role models and the decision by Hibernians will not only define the club but also, to a certain extent, Malta.

"The PM hopes that the decision by the club's management takes this into consideration before the final decision."

Hibernians technical director, Jeffrey Farrugia, told Sky News Evans' rape conviction would not be a problem for the club.

"He paid for what he did so for us it is not an issue," he said.

"We'll open the doors for him to come over here and start his career again in international football."

Evans is keen to resume his playing career after being released from prison in October.

He served two-and-a-half years of a five-year sentence after being found guilty of raping a 19-year-old woman in 2011. He claimed she had agreed to have sex.

He was initially given permission by Sheffield United to train with them at the request of players' union, the Professional Footballers Association.

But following a backlash from supporters, sponsors and patrons, including Olympic gold medallist Jessica Ennis-Hill, the club changed their mind.

British Ebola Nurse Now 'Critical' In Hospital

A British nurse battling Ebola in a London hospital is now in a critical condition, medical staff say.

A statement from the Royal Free Hospital said the health of Pauline Cafferkey, who was diagnosed after travelling back to Glasgow from Sierra Leone, had deteriorated over the past two days.

Ms Cafferkey, who was part of a team of medical volunteers deployed to Africa by the UK Government last month, is being treated using the blood of a recovered patient and an experimental anti-viral drug which has not yet been proven to work.

Earlier this week Dr Michael Jacobs, who has been involved in Ms Cafferkey's treatment, said she had been sitting up and talking - adding she was able to read, eat and drink and had spoken to her family.

However, he revealed the hospital was unable to obtain ZMapp, the drug used to treat fellow British volunteer nurse William Pooley, who recovered, because "there is none in the world at the moment".

A brief statement on the hospital's website said: "The Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust is sorry to announce that the condition of Pauline Cafferkey has gradually deteriorated over the past two days and is now critical."

Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt said: "I know Dr Mike Jacobs and his team at the Royal Free Hospital are working tirelessly to provide her with the best possible care."

Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon added: "Our thoughts continue to be with Pauline Cafferkey and her family during this extremely distressing time."

Ms Cafferkey, who is from Glasgow and works at Blantyre Health Centre, South Lanarkshire, was diagnosed with the deadly virus after returning to Glasgow from Heathrow. She had flown from Sierra Leone via Casablanca in Morocco.

At Heathrow, the 39-year-old was considered high risk because of the nature of her work and checked, but showed no symptoms. When she raised concerns about her temperature, she was checked a further six times but cleared to travel and returned to Glasgow.

Ms Cafferkey was then transferred from Scotland to north London on an RAF Hercules plane.

A Public Health England (PHE) spokeswoman confirmed all British-based passengers and crew members on both flights from Heathrow to Glasgow and from Casablanca to Heathrow have been contacted.

She said they had all been "given advice and reassurance" by health officials.

She added that an additional 31 passengers on the Casablanca to Heathrow flight were being contacted by international public health authorities.

The Moroccan Ministry of Health has also been tracing passengers aboard the Royal Air Maroc flight from Freetown in Sierra Leone to Casablanca as a precautionary measure.

All passengers on that flight were screened before they left Freetown and cleared to travel, as well as on their arrival in Casablanca, PHE said.

Ebola Nurse Pauline Cafferkey In London Hospital

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 30 Desember 2014 | 22.56

Nurse Pauline Cafferkey who fell ill after returning from Sierra Leone is being treated for Ebola at a specialist infectious diseases unit in London.

Ms Cafferkey, a Scot, was initially treated at a Glasgow hospital. She is the first person diagnosed with Ebola in the UK and is receiving specialist medical care at the Royal Free Hospital.

The nurse returned to Scotland after a spell working in Sierra Leone and arrived at Glasgow Airport on a British Airways flight at around 11.30pm on Sunday. She was showing no symptoms at the time.

Dr Martin Deahl, who travelled back to the UK with Ms Cafferkey, was critical of Public Health England for allowing the returning health workers to travel home by public transport and giving conflicting advice.

He told Sky News: "The thing that surprised most of us is that Public Health England suggested that we could go home from the airport by any way we wanted on public transport, so the underground, or in Pauline's case, the flight to Glasgow.

"Once we got home, we were not to use public transport or go to crowded places."

He added: "If there had been alternative arrangements for Pauline a lot of the people on that flight to Glasgow would not be going through the anxiety and stress that they are at the moment."

Dr Deahl said staff at Heathrow seemed "inadequately prepared" to carry out the "so-called health check" the group needed.

"We were queueing for over an hour in very close proximity in this small space so in that sense, everybody came close to Pauline."

Engaged Couple Among Victims Of AirAsia Crash

An engaged couple on holiday with the fiance's parents and a family of four are among the victims of the doomed AirAsia flight that crashed into the sea.

Contact was lost with air traffic control during a storm on Sunday as Flight QZ8501 headed to Singapore from the Indonesian city of Surabaya with 162 people on board.

Nearly all those on the plane were Indonesian, but they also included three from South Korea, and one each from the UK, Malaysia, France and Singapore.

Their stories are beginning to emerge.

:: Ruth Natalia Puspitasari, her fiance, Bob Hartanto Wijaya, and his parents, Marilyn and William Wijaya

Ms Puspitasari, who would have turned 26 on Monday, was on the flight with her fiance and future parents-in-law for a New Year's holiday.

She called her father, Suyanto, just before she boarded, and she told him excitedly that they planned to celebrate her birthday in Singapore.

Suyanto told reporters that his daughter had showed particular concern for the families of the MH370 tragedy.

Ms Puspitasari once told him how sad it must be for the victims' relatives who were left waiting for their loved ones with no certainty.

She and her fiance reportedly met at Petra Christian University in Surabaya, Indonesia - the same town their ill-fated flight had taken off from.

But after graduating, economics student Ms Puspitasari - from East Java - had moved to Guangzhou, China.

Her fiance, who had studied architecture, stayed behind after becoming co-owner of Eka Toys in his hometown of Malang.

:: Chi Man Choi and daughter Zoe

The British businessman and his two-year-old daughter were among the passengers.

His Singaporean wife and their other child had travelled back to Singapore on an earlier flight, according to Channel News Asia.

They were all believed to be flying to Singapore for New Year's Eve celebrations with his family.

:: Hermanto Tanus, his partner Indahju Liangsih and their sons Nico Giovanni, 17, and nine-year-old Justin Giovanni

In Singapore, student Chiara Natasya Tanus, 15, had been waiting eagerly for a visit from her parents and brothers.

She had not seen her family, who are from Surabaya, since she left for Singapore to pursue her secondary education two months ago.

She told Malaysia's The Star: "My mum called me on the 23rd and told me she would visit me very soon, but then this happened.

"I was so excited. I was looking forward to showing my dormitory to my family and we were planning for a holiday in Singapore."

:: Nanang Priyo Widodo

Mr Widodo, 43, had only been back in Indonesia for one day after a business trip to Malaysia before he left for another one in Singapore.

He had ridden his motorcycle to get to the airport as quickly as possible.

His wife, Warih Aditya, 33, told the Jakarta Post: "He arrived home two days ago from accompanying tourists to Malaysia. He was at home for one day, then had to go with other clients to Singapore."

:: Florentina Maria Widodo

The 26-year-old school teacher from Hwa Chong Institution in Singapore taught biology was affectionately known to family and friends as Tina.

Ms Widodo and her boyfriend Andy Paul Chen were both from the National University of Singapore, and were members in the university's guitar ensemble.

Ms Widodo reportedly graduated from the National Institute of Education last year.

She sat in the seat next to Mr Widodo, but it is not known whether they were related.

:: Siau Alain Octavianus

His fiancee Louise Sidharta had been at Singapore's Chani Airport waiting for her future husband to return from a family holiday.

She said: "It was supposed to be their last vacation before we got married."

The couple were reportedly planning to wed next May.

:: Natalina Wuntarjo

The passenger had planned to spend a short time with a friend in Singapore and then go on to Malaysia before returning home to Indonesia on December 31, said her mother Djun Ik.

She said her daughter was a good person who worked diligently at a restaurant in Surabaya.

Tests Don't Mean An Ebola Outbreak Is Imminent

Medical authorities had been expecting a case of Ebola to be diagnosed in the UK by Christmas. They were just a few days out.

The infection control procedures appear to have been followed to the letter.

The nurse sought medical advice by phone when she developed symptoms overnight, a specialist ambulance crew wearing protective equipment put her into quarantine and just one person is thought to have had direct contact with her.

Passengers sitting near her on the flight from London Heathrow to Glasgow on Sunday evening are being contacted.

But this seems to be a precaution - the nurse was not suffering symptoms on board and so wasn't infectious.

The safety-first approach also lies behind the isolation of a second possible case in Scotland, and another in Truro, while they are tested for the virus.

Anyone with a fever who has been to the West African countries affected by the epidemic and may have had contact with the virus is considered a risk.

But the symptoms could also be due to malaria, or indeed flu.

Public Health England figures from 4 December show that 113 patients have been tested for Ebola in similar circumstances over the last few months.

Just one - nurse Will Pooley - was positive.

So there is no reason to panic about a sudden burst of possible Ebola cases.

All it shows is that the medical authorities are being cautious. They won't gamble with public health when it comes to Ebola.

Bodies Found In AirAsia Missing Plane Search

At least 40 bodies and wreckage including a plane door and oxygen tanks have been recovered in the search for missing AirAsia Flight QZ8501.

The bodies - which were not wearing life jackets - have been brought on board a navy ship, said Indonesia's search and rescue director SB Supriyadi.

Local television showed pictures of the bodies floating in the sea.

"The warship Bung Tomo has retrieved 40 bodies and the number is growing. They are very busy now," said a navy spokesman.

They were found in the Java Sea southwest of Borneo, about six miles (10km) from where the plane last communicated with air traffic control.

Search chief SB Supriyadi also said the air force had "found an object described as a shadow at the bottom of the sea in the form of a plane".

An expert from the UK's Air Accidents Investigation Branch is heading to the area with equipment to help detect the signal from the plane's black box.

Objects spotted earlier have also been confirmed as wreckage from the plane and some have been taken away for testing.

AirAsia boss Tony Fernandes tweeted that his "heart is filled with sadness" and rushed to Surabaya airport to meet distraught relatives.

"It's an experience I never dreamt of happening and it's probably an airline CEO's worst nightmare," said Mr Fernandes.

"The passengers were on my aircraft and I have to take responsibility for that,"

The Airbus A320-200 disappeared from radar on Sunday morning on its way from Surabaya, Indonesia's second-biggest city, to Singapore.

The mother of a British man trapped with hundreds of people on the top deck of a burning ship in the Adriatic Sea has told of her fears.

Dotty Channing-Williams said she has spoken to her son Nicholas, who was one of two Britons aboard the Norman Atlantic, but the phone call cut off.

The ship caught fire just after 6am local time about 35 miles north of Corfu, close to the Albanian city of Vlora, while it was travelling from Patras, Greece, to Ancona in Italy with 478 on board.

Ms Channing Williams told Sky News: "People in Greece are saying that their communications have been cut off, so as not to hamper rescue operations which I can fully understand."

"They're keeping me updated via the news coming over the Greek television. But nevertheless it is very, very worrying and very scary.

"So I just hope that they will be able to get everybody off there as soon as possible."

Search Suspended For Missing AirAsia Plane

A British businessman and his two-year-old daughter are believed to be among those travelling on a flight which has lost contact with air traffic controllers.

Hull-born Choi Chi Man and his daughter Zoe are understood to have been on board the AirAsia flight which was carrying 162 people from Indonesia to Singapore

His Singaporean wife and their other child had travelled back to Singapore on an earlier flight, according to Channel News Asia.

Indonesian Transport Ministry official Hadi Mustofa said Flight QZ8501 stopped communicating with the Jakarta air traffic control tower at 7.24am local time.

He said the plane had asked for an unusual route before contact was lost with Indonesia's Juanda International Airport in Surabaya. The flight was expected to arrive in Singapore at 8.30am local time (12.30am UK time).

The search for the plane has now been called off for the day, and is due to resume at first light.

An AirAsia statement said there are 155 passengers on board; 138 adults, 16 children and one infant. Also on board are two pilots and five crew members.

Most of those on board - 155 - are from Indonesia, three from South Korea, and one each from the UK, Malaysia, France and Singapore.

According to air traffic control website Flight Radar, the aircraft was travelling at 32,000ft over the Java Sea when contact was lost.

Pilot Rakam Singh told Sky News: "As you climb higher the temperature gets lower ... if you hit turbulence you've got more chance of stalling an aircraft if you hit this kind of weather."

He said the chances of carrying out a safe landing after that were low.

This year has been the worst year for aviation accidents in a decade - largely as a result of the MH17 and MH370 disasters.

A statement on Malaysia-based AirAsia's Facebook page said: "AirAsia Indonesia regrets to confirm that Flight QZ8501 from Surabaya to Singapore has lost contact with air traffic control at 07.24hrs this morning.

"The aircraft was an Airbus A320-200 with the registration number PK-AXC. At this time, search and rescue operations are in progress and AirAsia is cooperating fully and assisting the rescue service."

The airline has set up an emergency call centre for family or friends of those who may have been on board the aircraft.
