Screams As 35 Sick Migrants Found In Container

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 16 Agustus 2014 | 22.56

A dead man was among 35 immigrants found in a container at Tilbury Docks after crew were alerted by "banging and screaming".

Police have launched a "homicide" investigation after the man was discovered with 34 sick children and adults hiding in a container on a P&O ferry.

At least seven of those treated at three different hospitals with "significant health problems" were children.

At a press conference at Tilbury Docks, Essex Superintendent Trevor Roe said the man's death was being treated as a crime.

Seven ambulances were sent to the scene and Basildon Hospital said on its Twitter feed that it was "responding to a major incident".

The East of England Ambulance service confirmed a hazardous area response team had also been sent to the scene.

Eighteen patients were taken to Basildon Hospital, nine to London Whitechapel Hospital and seven to Southend Hospital.

Some were suffering from severe dehydration and hypothermia.

A police officer at the scene said they are still trying to determine the nationalities of those involved but they are believed to be of Indian origin, possibly Punjab.

Essex Police were called after the people were found on the container, which arrived on a ship from Zeebrugge in Belgium and was being unloaded at 7.35am.

Natalie Hardy, from P&O Ferries, said the immigrants were in a container on board the Norstream, a commercial vessel.

She said the ship was scheduled to leave Zeebrugge last night at 10pm and arrive at Tilbury today at 6am.

It was carrying 64 containers, 72 trailers and five lorries and drivers.

Ms Hardy said: "They (port authorities) found 35 clandestines on a container in the ferry.

"They had been in there overnight, because the ship was an overnight freight ferry.

"This morning when they went to unload containers there was a noise heard, a banging. One unfortunately was dead and others were taken to hospital."

A spokeswoman for Public Health England said it was not involved in the response to, investigation of or anything to do with the incident at Tilbury Docks.

She said: "If it was ebola, health care professionals are so alert at the moment to signs and symptoms that should there have been anyone who was showing symptoms we would have been notified immediately.

"I think we can be confident that we are not dealing with that."

Police are dealing with the incident alongside staff from Port of Tilbury, UK Border Force and the East of England Ambulance Service, the spokesman said.

Migrants 'Risked Being Trapped For Days'

More than 30 migrants found in a container at Tilbury Docks could have been locked inside for days had the crew not heard their screams, a border policing expert told Sky News.

Tony Smith, director of Borderpol, said containers were often left at the dockside for long periods before being opened.

"These people were locked in, with no real idea when that container would have been opened.," he said.

"Were it not for an intervention at Tilbury, where they were heard inside, then they could have been in there for some days, just left on the dockside."

Map of Tilbury Docks

One person died and 34 others, including at least seven children, were discovered dehydrated and with hypothermia in the container at the Essex docks.

Mr Smith, whose organisation brings together intelligence on border issues, said he was certain the would-be migrants were put into the container by a crime gang.

"Let's be under no illusion, this is international organised crime," he said.

"There are people involved in this business - they have no regard whatsoever for borders, they have no concern for the health and safety and welfare of their cargo, their human cargo - it's a miserable business."

Container death at Tilbury Docks Police have launched a 'homicide' investigation

Mr Smith said the route out of Zeebrugge was an unusual one for immigrants to take because they would need to be locked into the hard-sided containers.

"Usually most of the resources in the border forces are concentrated in Calais and northern France because the opportunist illegal immigrant, or would-be illegal immigrant, will seek to board a lorry there, a soft-sided vehicle," he said.

"We do target containers for commodities - drugs, illegal substances, but it's unusual for humans to get on board containers.

"It's important to emphasise the dangers of doing that because these containers are sealed units."

Iraq: 'Secret' Surveillance Flights Revealed

The UK has been secretly flying its most advanced surveillance aircraft over northern Iraq during the humanitarian crisis there, the Defence Secretary has revealed.

The Rivet Joint intelligence gathering aircraft has been deployed to boost a team of Tornado jets gathering intelligence as Kurdish forces battle against Islamist militants in the region.

Information picked up by British forces is being fed back to the Iraqi government, Kurdish fighters and US forces in the region as they try to stem the tide of the Islamic State (IS) advance.

Revealing the move at RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus, Defence Secretary Michael Fallon said: "We will continue the humanitarian mission here and we will continue to make sure we will do everything we can to assist with the refugee problem which is wider than the Sinjar mountains."

Michael Fallon visits UK troops in Cyprus Michael Fallon speaking to British troops at the RAF Akrotiri base

He added: "I can confirm today we have deployed Rivet Joint, our very latest surveillance aircraft, the successor to Nimrod, to give us a much better picture, more intelligence and analysis of what is happening on the ground which will help the Iraqi government, the Kurdish forces and the Americans."

The Rivet Joint aircraft has carried out a number of flights over the past few weeks, helping to pinpoint the locations of displaced people and IS fighters.

It provides real-time intelligence by intercepting electromagnetic signals, which can be combined with images gathered by Tornado jets to provide a fuller picture of the situation on the ground.

Mr Fallon was visiting the Cyprus base for the RAF's Iraq aid drop operation.

He spent time with the teams packing and dispatching the aid bundles and told the Army and RAF personnel involved: "This mission isn't over yet."

Sky News Correspondent Tom Parmenter, at RAF Akrotiri, Cyprus said the Rivet Joint aircraft was like a "listening post in the sky".

Displaced people from the minority Yazidi sect in a Dohuk refugee camp Half a million people are believed to be displaced in Iraq's Dahuk region

He said: "It's an aircraft that goes up packed full of kit and analysis equipment to make sure the intelligence is as strong as it can be in terms of what they are gathering and how they are analysing it in this region and then feeding it back to the decision makers in Washington and London."

RAF Tornado jets have been flying missions over vast areas in northern Iraq, aided by larger Voyager planes that help them refuel at 300mph.

Britain has also been delivering aid to help families fleeing the militants - the latest supplies of vital cooking equipment, needed by people forced to leave their homes suddenly.

Two Airbus flights landed in Irbil on Saturday morning with nearly 8,000 sets of cutlery, cooking pots, plates, frying pans, cups and wooden spoons.

The supplies will mean almost 40,000 people, who currently have to queue at makeshift canteens, will be able to cook for themselves and feed their families, the Department for International Development said.

There are approximately half a million displaced people in northern Iraq's Dahuk region - many of them arriving at refugee camps after travelling for days without food and water in temperatures of up to 50C.

Iraq Militants 'Kill Hundreds And Take Families'

More than 400 Yazidi men have been killed and their families abducted by militants in northern Iraq, local officials have said.

A senior official at the Ministry of Peshmerga in the Kurdish-controlled region of the country told Sky News women and children had been seized by the fighters from Islamic State (IS), also known as Islamic State In Iraq and Syria (ISIS), and taken to Tal Afar, near Mosul.

The men from the village of Kocho were reportedly killed over two days - 82 on Friday and another 312 on Saturday, the officials said.

Earlier, Yazidi fighter Mohsen Tawwal told AFP by telephone that he had seen a large number of bodies after entering the village.

"We made it into a part of Kocho village, where residents were under siege, but we were too late," he said.

"There were corpses everywhere. We only managed to get two people out alive. The rest had all been killed."

Thousands of Yazidis - people from a minority sect with an ancient religion - have been forced to flee their homes by the IS advance across northern Iraq.

Missouri Teen 'In Robbery' Before He Was Shot

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 15 Agustus 2014 | 22.55

An unarmed black teenager shot dead by an officer was a suspect in a "strong-arm" robbery minutes before the fatal confronation, say police.

Michael Brown, 18, allegedly stole cigars and shoved a clerk at a convenience store in suburban St Louis last Saturday, just before he was killed by a police officer, spawning almost a week of public disorder.

Ferguson Police Chief Thomas Jackson released the police reports and documents on Friday morning as he named the officer who carried out the shooting.

Darren Wilson, who has six years' service and no disciplinary record, is on administrative leave following the incident.

According to the police reports, Mr Brown and his friend, Dorian Johnson, were suspected of taking a box of Swisher Sweet Cigars from a store in Ferguson that morning.

Chief Jackson said Officer Wilson encountered Mr Brown about 10 minutes after the robbery, at around 12:01pm, and a second officer arrived three minutes later.

Police have previously said the officer opened fire after he was pushed into his squad car by one of two men he encountered on the street.

They then assaulted him in the vehicle and struggled with the policeman over the officer's weapon, according to Ferguson police.

A shot was fired inside the car before Mr Brown was shot multiple times, according to police.

Dorian Johnson has been telling media a starkly different version of events.

He said he and Mr Brown were ordered by an officer to stop walking in the street. Mr Johnson said the officer then tried to pull Mr Brown into the squad car before pulling his weapon and firing.

The developments emerged the morning after hundreds of protesters marched side by side with officers in a dramatic turnabout, following a law enforcement facelift in Ferguson.

The president urged all sides to "take a step back" and called for a "time for healing".

St Louis County Police have previously been accused of racially profiling black people and of racist hiring procedures.

Attorney General Eric Holder said on Thursday he was concerned the use of military equipment by police in Ferguson was sending a "conflicting message".

Foreign Ministers Agree To Arm Kurds In Iraq

EU foreign ministers meeting in Brussels have agreed to arm Kurdish fighters battling Islamist militants in northern Iraq.

Prior to the meeting France, Germany, the Czech Republic and the Netherlands all said they were prepared to supply weapons to the Peshmerga forces.

It comes after Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond described Islamic State (IS) as a "terrible threat" and the UN designated the humanitarian situation in the country a "level three emergency".

The meeting of foreign ministers from the 28 EU nations, called by EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, followed reports of thousands of Yazidi refugees stranded in the Sinjar Mountains.

Frank-Walter Steinmeier, German Foreign Minister, said: "Iraq is on the brink of a true catastrophe. A million people in Iraq are fleeing their homes.

"In northern Iraq, in the Kurdish part, Yazidis and Christians are being persecuted and slaughtered."

Defence matters are normally the responsibility of member states, so the EU approval to send weapons is rare.

But governments are also concerned that IS could attract radicals from Europe who then return to the West.

Earlier this week, the European Commission said it would increase humanitarian aid to Iraq to €17m (£13.6m).

Police Admission Over Cliff Richard Home Search

South Yorkshire Police have admitted working with a media outlet before searching Sir Cliff Richard's home in Berkshire.

They said when they were contacted by the outlet with information about an investigation, they decided to work with them "to protect the integrity" of that probe.

They added: "Since the search took place a number of people have contacted the police to provide information and we must acknowledge that the media played a part in that, for which we are grateful".

Sir Cliff, 73, has said he did not know officers were planning to search his penthouse apartment on the Charters Estate in Sunningdale and only learnt about it through media reports.

A search warrant was granted after a historical claim of sex assault was made involving a boy who was under the age of 16 at the time.

The accusation, which Sir Cliff has dismissed as "completely false", relates to an event held by American evangelist preacher Billy Graham in Sheffield in 1985.

Ukraine's Forces Attack Russian Armoured Convoy

Ukraine's forces say they attacked a Russian armoured convoy that crossed on to Ukrainian soil "and part of it no longer exists".

Military officials in Kiev said they tracked the vehicles, including armoured personnel carriers, from the border and then attacked with artillery.

President Petro Poroshenko discussed the incursion with British Prime Minister David Cameron and said a "considerable part of this equipment was destroyed overnight by Ukrainian artillery".

Sky's Sam Kiley said if the claims are true "it is a very serious development"  in the four-month conflict, and "could be the beginnings of something much more dangerous".

World stock markets have tumbled on the news.

Russia denied its forces had crossed into Ukraine, and accused Kiev of trying to sabotage deliveries of aid.

A map showing the location of Donetsk in Ukraine

The Russian vehicles crossed the border near the town of Donetsk on Thursday night, according to journalists from The Guardian and Daily Telegraph.

This was later confirmed by Nato chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen, who said it was a "clear demonstration of continued Russian involvement in the destabilisation of eastern Ukraine".

Earlier, British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said he was "very alarmed" at the Russian military incursion.

Mr Hammond has summoned the Russian ambassador to clarify the situation.

Meanwhile, the Red Cross said it is still trying to verify that an aid convoy from Russia to Ukraine is carrying nothing more than humanitarian aid.

Ukrainian border guards are checking the cargo on Russian territory near the Ukrainian settlement of Izvaryne, held by separatists.

A dozen Russian armoured trucks are waiting with the aid lorries.

Ukraine is concerned the convoy of about 260 vehicles would be used as a 'Trojan horse', allowing Russia to establish a permanent presence in the east.

In an effort to ease tensions, Russian officials allowed journalists to see the contents of trucks.

Among the supplies reporters saw were bottles of water, sacks of buckwheat and portable generators.

Record Numbers Off To Uni As A* Grades Rise

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 14 Agustus 2014 | 22.55

By Afua Hirsch, Social Affairs and Education Editor

A record number of students have been accepted into university, with a rise in the number achieving top marks in their A-level exams.

Ucas, the organisation which handles the admissions process, said 396,990 young people had been awarded places on degree courses - up 3% on last year.

Meanwhile, the number of students achieving at least one A* grade rose 0.6% to 8.2%, although the number gaining an A grade or above fell by 0.3%.

The overall pass rate also fell for the first time in 32 years, with the number of students achieving an A*-E grade down 0.1% to 98%.

Girls from Newcastle High School in Jesmond, Newcastle, celebrate their A-level results Girls from Newcastle High School celebrate their A-level results

Students who received lower grades are expected to enjoy unprecedented access to university, with up to 30,000 new places created.

A decision by the Government to abolish the cap on student numbers could have a dramatic effect on this year's cohort, with fierce competition among universities seeking to attract school leavers.

Some were offering cash "scholarships", while others were offering reductions on accommodation and free tablet computers.

Mary Curnock-Cook, chief executive of Ucas, told Sky News: "Compared with their brothers and sisters two or three years ago, students will feel it's a little easier (to get into university)."

Coventry University, which is offering £1,000 cashback, said the giveaways did make a difference but did not unduly influence students.

Deputy vice chancellor Ian Marshall said: "Most students come to university on the basis of the subject they are interested in and the reputation of the institution."

The decision to expand the number of student places comes amid increasing concern about quality assurance in higher education and job prospects for graduates, with recent figures showing almost half of graduates were in non-graduate level jobs.

However, Education Secretary Nicky Morgan said: "This shouldn't be about ever higher numbers - it should be about ever higher standards.

"An A-level is still a significant achievement ... and we want an A-level that future employers and universities have confidence in."

Rhasan Brunner, who received an offer to study at London Goldsmith's University, said he was deferring his place to take an apprenticeship.

The 19-year-old, who studied at Brooke House Sixth Form College in Hackney, northeast London, said students should think twice about doing degrees, which now cost up to £9,000 a year in tuition fees alone.

"That debt is going to stay over their head for quite a long time," he said.

"Plus jobs are really rare and scarce and quite competitive nowadays, so it doesn't really guarantee you a job after university."

Access to university has been expanding since the 1960s, when a report by economist Lionel Robbins advocated opening up higher education to all those who qualified by virtue of ability and attainment.

Two years ago, the Government abolished the cap on students with the highest grades, essentially paving the way for the expansion of the elite Russell Group of universities.

But the new expansion for students with lower grades - which could also include an additional 60,000 extra students next year - has prompted concerns about quality.

Jude Heaton, from Teach First, a charity set up to end inequality in education, said: "The risk is we create a two-tier system, where pupils from richer backgrounds go to the most selective institutions ... (while) people from poorer backgrounds have an almost second tier university education."

Earlier this week, social mobility charity Sutton Trust warned students from disadvantaged backgrounds are 10 times less likely to apply to the UK's 13 most selective universities.

There are also reports that today's results will confirm a deepening of the gender divide, as girls continue to shun STEM - science, technology, engineering and maths.

Heavy Shelling Heard In Rebel-Held Donetsk

Heavy shelling has pounded the centre of Ukraine's separatist-held city of Donetsk, according to witnesses.

People poured out of their offices onto the stairwell of the city's main administration building after loud explosions nearby triggered an evacuation warning, reports said.

Donetsk has been surrounded for several weeks by Ukrainian forces battling pro-Russian rebels.

The shelling follows the resignation of pro-Russian separatist leader Valery Bolotov, head of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic.

Mr Bolotov said he had been injured and could no longer continue his role.

His resignation came as a Russian aid convoy resumed its journey toward Ukraine, taking the road leading south towards rebel-held Luhansk.

The convoy of roughly 262 vehicles had been parked at a military depot in the southern Russian city of Voronezh since late on Tuesday.

There has been confusion and disagreement over how and where the aid could be delivered to Ukraine, where government troops are battling pro-Russia separatists.

By sending the convoy south, Russia appeared intent on not abiding by a tentative agreement to deliver aid to a border checkpoint in the Kharkiv region.

It had been hoped that the convoy would arrive in the Kharkiv region, so that the Red Cross could inspect the convoy.

Instead, the route taken by the convoy leads directly toward a border crossing controlled by pro-Russian rebels in the Luhansk region.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has accused Moscow of planning a "direct invasion of Ukrainian territory under the guise of delivering humanitarian aid".

Moscow has insisted it coordinated the dispatch of the goods - including baby food, canned meat and sleeping bags - with Red Cross officials.

Red Cross spokeswoman Anastasia Isyuk said talks between the organisation, Ukraine and Russia were continuing.

But she could not confirm where the Russian convoy was headed.

"The plans keep changing, the discussions are going ahead and we will not confirm for sure until we know an agreement has been reached," Ms Isyuk said in Geneva.

Luhansk, where Mr Bolotov had declared himself "mayor", has been the scene of intense fighting between Ukrainian forces and separatists.

Mr Bolotov said Igor Plotnitsky, defence minister of the Luhansk People's Republic, would take over from him.

His resignation means that both the main separatist entities, in the Luhansk and Donetsk regions of eastern Ukraine, are having leadership changes.

Vladimir Putin said on Thursday that Russia would do its utmost to stop the bloodshed in Ukraine.

During a visit to Crimea, Mr Putin also said that Russia should not "fence itself off from the outside world" despite a plunge in East-West relations.

As well as the shelling in Donetsk, fighting has killed at least 22 residents in the besieged rebel-held bastion of Luhansk over the past 24 hours.

Iraq: US-UK Pull Back On Yazidi Rescue Mission

A US and UK humanitarian mission to rescue thousands of people trapped in Iraq is "far less likely" to take place after it has been revealed fewer are stranded than previously feared.

US Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel made the comments on Wednesday, and unnamed officials have since said that after a survey by US special forces gave an estimate of 4,500 civilians remaining on Mount Sinjar.

They said nearly half are herders and shepherds who lived there before the siege and do not want to be evacuated.

The US team spent Wednesday on the siege mountain and said circumstances were less dire than earlier feared.

Kurdish Peshmerga fighters have since told Sky News there are only around 2,000 on the mountain.

Earlier, Prime Minister David Cameron said the UK's plans needed to be "flexible" for the "complicated humanitarian mission" and stressed the need to continue delivering aid to refugees.

The PM, who has resisted calls for military intervention, chaired a meeting of the Cobra emergency committee to discuss the situation further.

But Tory backbencher Mark Pritchard, who believes Britain should still be doing more, told Sky News: "Bread alone will not stop ISIS, it will require bullets."

He added: "They are not going to stop until they are stopped... we need to confront the enemy."

The UK has successfully completed seven aid airdrops and was sending a "small number" of RAF Chinook helicopters to the region.

It has sent RAF Tornado jets equipped with sophisticated surveillance equipment to help gather intelligence.

It had previously been thought there were between 20,000 and 30,000 people trapped on Mount Sinjar after fleeing Sunni militants of the Islamic State (IS), formerly known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

Sky News Political Correspondent Sophy Ridge said: "I am told that just like the Americans, it is now unlikely that the UK government is going to carry out a rescue mission, and that's simply because the information has changed.

"Although there are fewer people on the mountain than previously thought, it doesn't mean humanitarian help is not needed elsewhere in northern Iraq."

IS fighters have threatened the ancient Yazidi religious group, many of those who were on the mountain, with death if they fail to convert to Islam.

The Pentagon said that humanitarian aid drops, airstrikes on IS fighters and the efforts of Peshmerga fighters had allowed many Yazidis to escape.

Bayan Sami Abdul Rahman, the Kurdish government's high representative to the UK, told Sky News while the new refugee figures spelled "good news", up to two million displaced civilians remained "in a dire situation" in the Kurdistan region.

Her comments came as the United Nations ramped up its assessment of the crisis to level 3 - its highest level of emergency - and condemned the "barbaric acts" of sexual violence IS fighters have reportedly inflicted on minority groups.

Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, said the Iraqi government had "received atrocious accounts on the abduction and detention of Yazidi, Christian, Turkomen and Shabak women and girls and boys, and reports of savage rapes".

"Some 1,500 Yazidis and Christians may have been forced into sexual slavery," he added.

Cliff Richard's Home Searched Over Sex Claim

Police have searched Sir Cliff Richard's home in connection with a sex offence allegation dating back to the 1980s - which the singer has dismissed as "completely false".

Sky News understands the allegation against Sir Cliff comes from an event held by American evangelist preacher Billy Graham in Sheffield in 1985.

South Yorkshire Police officers gained entry to the 73-year-old singer's private art deco estate in the Sunningdale area of Berkshire on Thursday morning after apparently arriving without warning.

A search warrant was granted after a historical claim of a sexual nature was made involving a boy who was under the age of 16 at the time.

Cliff Richard property in Berkshire Sunningdale Police searched the singer's home in Sunningdale, Berkshire

No-one has been arrested and the owner of the property was not present, the force said.

In a statement issued as officers searched his home for several hours, Sir Cliff said: "For many months I have been aware of allegations against me of historic impropriety which have been circulating online. The allegations are completely false.

"Up until now I have chosen not to dignify the false allegations with a response, as it would just give them more oxygen.

"However, the police attended my apartment in Berkshire today without notice, except, it would appear, to the press.

"I am not presently in the UK but it goes without saying that I will co-operate fully should the police wish to speak to me.

cliff richard diamond jubilee Sir Cliff performing at the Queen's Diamond Jubilee concert in 2012

"Beyond stating that today's allegation is completely false it would not be appropriate to say anything further until the police investigation has concluded."

Sky's Crime Correspondent Martin Brunt said Sir Cliff, who was knighted in 1995, was not warned about the search by officers, who removed several items from the singer's house.

"Police say they didn't have to break in. They were let in by, presumably, somebody who is looking after the house," he said.

"Last week, Sir Cliff was at his home in Portugal where he held a concert at his estate.

"He owns a vast property there with a vineyard. We don't know if he is still there, but he has said in the past that he spends his summers in Portugal and his winters in Barbados, where he owns another property.

"Police have given very few details of the allegation, but I am told it is said to have happened in Sheffield.

"They do suggest that more information will be given if a suspect is arrested.

"One other thing to point out is that this isn't part of Scotland Yard's investigation into historical sex crimes - Operation Yewtree - launched in the wake of the Jimmy Savile scandal.

"Whether the initial allegation was made to the Metropolitan Police and passed on to South Yorkshire, that's a possibility. But this is very much a South Yorkshire Police investigation."

Sir Cliff was born Harry Webb in Lucknow, India, in 1940. His hits include Summer Holiday and The Young Ones.

Derailed Train Carriages Plunge Into Ravine

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 13 Agustus 2014 | 22.55

A train carrying 200 passengers has been derailed by a landslide, causing several carriages to plunge into a ravine.

Pictures from the scene show at least one carriage in a ravine and another hanging precariously from the tracks winding through mountains in the east of Switzerland.

Rescue helicopters could also be seen hovering over the eight-carriage regional train in the heavily forested region of Graubuenden.

Scores of passengers on the carriages that managed to remain upright were evacuated to safety and could be seen at the side of the tracks, walking to the nearby town of Tiefencastel.

A number of injured passengers were airlifted to hospital, while several others were treated for shock by paramedics.

"Part of the train was derailed by a landslide," a spokesman for Rhaetische Bahn said, adding that he was unable to give further details immediately.

The train was travelling from the mountain resort of St Moritz to Chur when it was caught in the landslide between Tiefencastel and Solis, southeast of Zurich, at around 11.45am UK time.

Three carriages came off the tracks and plunged down the slope of the mountainous region following hours of rainfall earlier in the area.

Terrified passengers described moving to the rear of a carriage to stop it crashing over the edge.

SwitzerlandSwitzerland Passengers were evacuated and walked to the nearest town. Pic: Blick.ch

One told news website 20 Minuten: "We all rushed to the back of the carriage to put all of our weight there, so that it didn't tip into the abyss."

Another eyewitness, who was travelling with his wife and granddaughter to Basel, told Swiss website Blick.ch they were sitting behind one of the carriages that plunged into the ravine.

"There was an announcement that we should move into the rear car," he said.

Afterwards, all of those on board the train were told to get off it.

"We had to walk about a kilometre ... through a tunnel. The luggage is still on the train," he added.

Reports suggested there were no fatalities, but police said several passengers were injured.

PM: UK To Help In Major Iraq Rescue Mission

David Cameron has said "detailed plans" are being made for an international mission to rescue the Yazidis stranded in the mountains of northern Iraq.

The Prime Minister said Britain would "play a role in delivering" the rescue of thousands of ethnic minority Kurds who have been driven into Mount Sinjar by the Islamic State fighters.

Mr Cameron stressed it would be a "humanitarian operation" and said there was no need to recall Parliament to discuss it. He was speaking after chairing a Cobra meeting following his return from the family holiday in Portugal.

He has come under increasing pressure to commit to military action in Iraq. A growing number of MPs have told Sky News it is time for the UK to join US airstrikes to stop the advance of the extremists.

The UK has stepped up its aid drops in northern Iraq and is sending a "small number" of RAF Chinook helicopters to the region. It has also already sent RAF Tornado jets equipped with sophisticated surveillance equipment to gather intelligence.

Mr Cameron would not confirm whether the Chinooks would be used to airlift people off the mountains. He added that Britain would continue transporting weapons for the Kurdish forces, who have been outgunned by the jihadists.

Downing Street has consistently resisted calls for UK forces to join the US in taking military action against IS. It has also rejected demands for Parliament to be recalled to debate the crisis.

Thousands of Kurdish ethnic minority Yazidis have been driven into the Sinjar mountains to escape the onslaught of the militants, who have butchered their way through the north of Iraq leaving mass graves of victims in their wake.

The United Nations estimates that between 20,000 and 30,000 people from the ancient Yazidi community remain stranded, others have perished, unable to get food or water to survive, while some have been rescued by Kurdish forces.

Sky's Political Correspondent Sophy Ridge said of the 23 MPs she had spoken to, 18 said they would support military intervention and many urged Mr Cameron to recall Parliament.

Significantly, seven of those MPs who supported action voted against using military force in Syria to end the humanitarian crisis there.

Conservative MP Nick de Bois said: "Whether you support air strikes or not, and they should be on the table for urgent consideration, Parliament has both the moral obligation and a duty to our constituents to examine and advise the Government on whether we should take that step.

"Every day in this humanitarian crisis matters and that's why we should be recalled."

Another unnamed MP said: "It's very different from Syria, where the Government had no plan or conception of what might work. Here we have the Kurds on the ground. Also, recall of Parliament seems essential given world events."

It comes as British commanders with experience in Iraq have urged the Prime Minister to consider taking military action with Colonel Tim Collins warning the ancient civilisations in Iraq could be "extinguished".

Tony Abbott and Philip Hammond Tony Abbott, in London on Tuesday, hinted forces could return to Iraq

Col Collins claimed the Government had "left for lunch" on the issue, and accused politicians of refusing to accept the "moral responsibility" to act.

Writing in the Daily Telegraph, he said: "Britain helped create Iraq in 1920 and we have a moral responsibility to help."

A YouGov poll carried out for The Times suggests support for the British bombing of militants in Iraq is now at 40%. Some 36% of those asked were opposed to the UK taking action.

After talks with Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond in London on Tuesday, Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott indicated his country's combat forces could return to Iraq but stressed it would be to "prevent genocide" on a "fundamentally humanitarian mission".

Germany has pledged to deliver "non lethal" military aid, including armoured vehicles, helmets and night vision goggles, to the Iraqi army. France was expected to deliver arms to Kurdish forces later on Wednesday.

Former Conservative Defence Secretary Liam Fox also said it was time RAF jets were sent in to join US airstrikes. Writing in the Daily Mail, he said sending in aid was not enough.

The US has sent another 130 military advisers to northern Iraq to assess the scope of the humanitarian mission.

'Children So Thirsty They're Drinking Blood'

Parents cutting themselves so that thirsty children can drink their blood. Others dying from dehydration and being buried under rocks. These are some of the horrifying stories emerging from those who were trapped on a mountain by Islamic State (IS) fighters in Iraq.

Some 6,000 to 8,000 refugees have managed to escape to a makeshift camp in Dohuk province - but 30,000 still remain on Mount Sinjar in what a British aid worker has told Sky news is a "heartbreaking humanitarian crisis".

Sky's Sherine Tadros is at the Dohuk camp, which has no electricity and just three or four toilets.

The Sinjar mountains A map detailing the Sinjar mountains

"They've told us harrowing stories," she said. "One man has just told us how he saw four children die of thirst. There was nowhere to bury them on the mountain so they just put rocks on their bodies.

"Another man was saying the children were so thirsty, their parents started cutting their own hands and giving them blood to drink.

"And then they make the perilous journey to these areas - sometimes 12 hours. And when they get here the conditions are pretty dire. There is no electricity, no aid agencies - this is just a makeshift camp."

Refugees in the camp - some of whom have gunshot wounds - are surviving on food and water being brought to them by locals.

The international community is starting to take action - but the situation is now unprecedented, according to an aid worker on the ground.

"There is still a big humanitarian crisis going on - what I saw was heartbreaking," British Kurd Taban Shoresh told Sky News.

"We need to do something to rescue those people - 30,000 people trapped on a mountain by IS in fear of extermination. There is no way out - the only way to get to them is by helicopter.

Iraq. Refugees in Dohuk scramble for aid

"They've got absolutely nothing, and I can't stress this enough. No food, no water. They're dehydrated. They've got no clothes, their shoes have been worn off. It is extremely hot and exposed to the sun.

"This is the first time in history where 30,000 people have been trapped on a mountain in fear of being killed - all the leaders need to come together and figure out the best way to rescue these people. We can't watch 30,000 people die."

Each helicopter sent with aid or to lift the most vulnerable prompts a "scramble".

"They are fighting to get on the helicopters and survive - it's their only way out," added Ms Shoresh.

The local mayor has donated 230 tents, Tadros said - the only shelter available for the thousands lucky enough to escape Sinjar.

Woman Cleared Of Knickers Plot For Jihadis

A 27-year-old woman who tried to smuggle cash in her knickers on a flight to Turkey has been cleared of funding jihadists in Syria.

Nawal Msaad tried to take 20,000 euros (£15,830) in rolled-up notes on a flight from Heathrow to Istanbul in January, the Old Bailey heard.

She did it for her friend Amal El-Wahabi, 27, whose husband Aine Davis, 30, asked for the money, after leaving Britain to join jihadists in Syria last year.

The plot failed when she was stopped at the departure gate and she produced the cash, which had been hidden inside a condom, from her underwear.

Ms Msaad, from Holloway, north London, and El-Wahabi, from northwest London, both denied making money available with "reasonable cause to suspect that it would or may be used for the purposes of terrorism".

The jury cleared Ms Msaad but convicted mother-of-two El-Wahabi after deliberating for five days.

Cash smuggling to Syria court case El-Wahabi will be sentenced on September 12

El-Wahabi is the first Briton to be convicted under terror laws of funding jihadi fighters in Syria.

She wept in the dock as the jury returned its guilty verdict, saying: "I can't breathe, no, I cant breathe."

The pair are London-born of Moroccan descent and had been close friends for years, the court heard.

Ms Msaad, who had been studying human resources at London Metropolitan University, agreed to take the money in return for 1,000 euros in expenses, jurors were told.

When she was stopped at the departure gate, she said the three-day trip to Istanbul was a "short break" to buy gold for her mother.

Cash smuggling to Syria court case Ms Msaad, left, said she never meant to smuggle cash to bankroll terrorism

She was taken into a private room and produced the cash from her underwear.

The smuggling arrangements were made days before in phone calls and WhatsApp messages between El-Wahabi and her husband and Ms Msaad.

The same day Ms Msaad was arrested, police seized mobile phones and computer equipment from El-Wahabi's home.

Davis, who used the Muslim name Hamza, kept in regular contact with El-Wahabi after leaving London to pursue a jihadist cause.

After six months, El-Wahabi, who was living on benefits, was coming round to the idea of joining him wherever he was, the court heard.

The jury was shown a "selfie" Davis sent her, as well as videos containing jihadist propaganda.

El-Wahabi denied knowledge of any terrorist activities or their funding.

When Ms Msaad went into the witness box, she accused El-Wahabi of "stitching" her up by not telling her where the money came from.

She insisted she had never meant to smuggle cash abroad to bankroll terrorism.

Davis, who was born in London with roots in Gambia, met El-Wahabi at a local mosque and became increasingly interested in Islam six or seven years ago, the court heard.

His current whereabouts are unknown. El-Wahabi will be sentenced on September 12.

UK Carries Out Second Aid Drop In North Iraq

Updated: 3:53pm UK, Tuesday 12 August 2014

The RAF has completed its second aid drop over Northern Iraq, the Ministry of Defence has confirmed.

More than 3,000 reusable water containers holding 3,500 gallons of water and other "essential supplies" were dropped on Mount Sinjar.

Up to 40,000 Yazidis remain in the sweltering mountains after fleeing militants from the Islamic State (IS).

A previous attempt to drop supplies had to be abandoned for fear it could hurt those on the ground.

A "small number" of Tornado jets are also being sent to the region so they can be used, if required, to help ensure humanitarian supplies are delivered.

The US Secretary of State John Kerry urged Iraq's new Prime Minister Haidar al Abadi to form a new government quickly, following his appointment on Monday.

It had looked like his appointment could result in increased instability after the incumbent prime minister Nuri al Maliki refused to step down from the role he has had for eight years.

But reports from Iraq said many of Mr Maliki's previous supporters backed Mr Abadi's appointment and on Tuesday a senior Iranian official, the Arab League and Saudi Arabia also welcomed the move.

Meanwhile, Mr Maliki ordered Iraq's security forces to stay out of what he called a "political crisis", damping fears they may intervene.

The US has been calling on Baghdad to form an "inclusive" government for many weeks in order to counter the threat from IS, formerly known as ISIS.

Mr Kerry said of Mr Abadi, a former exile in the UK: "We are urging him to form a new cabinet as swiftly as possible and the US stands ready to support a new and inclusive Iraqi government and particularly its fight against (the Islamic State)."

Mr Kerry had been meeting with senior figures in the Australian government and said afterwards that the allies would take the threat posed by jihadist foreign fighters to the United Nations.

The UN move came after Australia's prime minister slammed a "barbaric" photo which apparently showed the seven-year-old son of a militant holding the severed head of a Syrian soldier.

The European Union said it was increasing its aid to Iraq by 5m euros, bringing its total to 17m euros, in addition to the £13m in total provided by the UK.

The US's Centcom military information centre said it had carried out five aid drops on Mount Sinjar and a number of airstrikes on IS targets near the mountains.

France is planning a second aid drop into the mountains of Sinjar in the next two days.

The US has admitted that airstrikes against militants will not be enough to halt the advance of IS.

Joint staff operations director Lieutenant General William Mayville said: "We assess that US airstrikes in northern Iraq have slowed Islamic State (IS) … however, these strikes are unlikely to affect IS's overall capabilities or its operations in other areas."

But Mr Kerry also tried to allay US fears of being drawn back into another ground conflict in the area - 11 years after it launched a war in the country.

"There will be no reintroduction of American combat forces into Iraq. This is a fight that Iraqis need to join on behalf of Iraq," Mr Kerry added.

World Mourns Loss Of 'Genius' Robin Williams

Robin Williams: Tributes For Actor Dead At 63

Updated: 3:15pm UK, Tuesday 12 August 2014

Relatives, showbiz personalities and politicians have expressed their sadness at the death of Robin Williams, who has died at the age of 63 in a suspected suicide.

The Oscar-winning actor was found dead at his home in northern California, according to the Marin County Sheriff's Office.

Williams' wife Susan Schneider said in a statement: "This morning, I lost my husband and my best friend, while the world lost one of its most beloved and beautiful human beings. I am utterly heartbroken."

His daughter Zelda Williams posted an excerpt from the French poet and aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupery, which read: "You - you alone will have the stars as no one else has them ... In one of the stars I shall be living."

She added: "I love you. I miss you. I'll try to keep looking up."

The star of much-loved films including Mrs Doubtfire and Good Morning, Vietnam had been struggling with severe depression in recent weeks, according to Williams' press agent Mara Buxbaum.

A statement from President Barack Obama described the actor as "one of a kind".

"Robin Williams was an airman, a doctor, a genie, a nanny, a president, a professor, a bangarang Peter Pan, and everything in between. But he was one of a kind," he said.

"He arrived in our lives as an alien - but he ended up touching every element of the human spirit. He made us laugh. He made us cry.

"He gave his immeasurable talent freely and generously to those who needed it most - from our troops stationed abroad to the marginalised on our own streets.

"The Obama family offers our condolences to Robin's family, his friends, and everyone who found their voice and their verse thanks to Robin Williams."

Many celebrity colleagues and admirers took to Twitter to express their shock at the actor's death, and to pay tribute to Williams' large and well-respected body of work.

Pam Dawber, his co-star in Mork and Mindy, said: "I am completely and totally devastated. What more can be said?"

Film director Ron Howard recalled that he saw Mork's genesis as they worked together on the US series Happy Days.

In a message posted online, he said: "We lost Robin - first witnessed his genius as he created Mork before our eyes in two hours on set. A Force. A Sweet Soul. A Brilliant Artist."

Comedian and actor Billy Connolly, a close friend of Williams, said: "Robin was both my friend and my hero, a unique talent and a kind and generous man; the world will be a much poorer place without him."

Billy Crystal, who starred in a number of films with  Williams and joined him for a cameo in the sitcom Friends, said: "No words."

Steven Spielberg, who worked with Williams on Hook, said: "Robin was a lightning storm of comic genius and our laughter was the thunder that sustained him.  He was a pal and I can't believe he's gone."

Spielberg famously regularly phoned Williams to cheer himself up during filming of his harrowing 1994 Holocaust drama Schindler's List.

Actor and comedian Steve Martin, his co-star in Waiting For Godot, said: "I could not be more stunned by the loss of Robin Williams, mensch, great talent, acting partner, genuine soul."

Williams' Mrs Doubtfire co-star Sally Field said: "He always lit up when he was able to make people laugh, and he made them laugh his whole life long - tirelessly. He was one of a kind. There will not be another."

The Birdcage co-star Nathan Lane said: "What I will always remember about Robin, perhaps even more than his comic genius, extraordinary talent and astounding intellect, was his huge heart - his tremendous kindness, generosity, and compassion as an acting partner, colleague and fellow traveler in a difficult world."

His Good Will Hunting co-star Minnie Driver said: "My heart's broken. Robin was a beautiful, kind soul. Can't bear that he's gone. So incredibly sorry for his family."

Tributes have also been left at the Boston bench made famous during that film with quotes written in chalk on the concrete.

Ben Stiller, who starred in the Night At The Museum films with Williams, said: "A tweet cannot begin to describe the hugeness of Robin Williams heart and soul and talent. This is so sad."

The third installment of the franchise is due for release at Christmas.

Ricky Gervais, who also stars in the films, said: "I am deeply saddened. He was a lovely man who would keep everyone laughing even if he wasn't feeling good himself. RIP Robin Williams."

Johnny Depp said: "The world lost a legend of an actor and an extraordinary man today. Rest In Peace Robin Williams."

The US actor and director Henry Winkler wrote on Twitter: "Robin Williams was like no other .. To watch him create on the spot was a privilege to behold.

"Robin you are an angel now!!! REST IN PEACE," he added.

The Prince of Wales, who met Williams several times, also paid tribute, saying: "He was a remarkable man, whose wonderful frenetic humour brought a special kind of laughter into people's lives."

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, in reference to his performance as the Genie in Aladdin, said: "Genie, you're free."

Comedian Eddie Izzard said: "Robin Williams has died and I am very sad. From every comedian here at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, we salute him & we say goodbye."

Up To 35,000 Refugees Escape Mount Sinjar

The UN says up to 35,000 refugees have escaped Iraq's Mount Sinjar and are "exhausted" and "dehydrated".

Thousands, who faced starvation, lack of water, and threats on the mountain, managed to reach northern Iraq's Kurdistan region through Syria over the past three days.

"The new arrivals are exhausted, dehydrated and many have suffered sun or heat stroke, with the daily temperatures reaching 40C to 45C," said UNHCR spokesman Adrian Edwards.

Meanwhile, an Iraqi helicopter delivering aid to Yazidis on the mountain has crashed, Iraq's military spokesman Lt Gen Qassim al Moussawi told state television.

He said it was a Russian-made helicopter but gave no details on casualties.

Robin Williams: A Crowd-Pleaser Suffering Inside

By Steve Hargrave, Entertainment Reporter

The dark, the light, the happy and the sad. Never have I interviewed such a fascinating man who trod such a public tightrope as Robin Williams.

But then for all the sadness that lurked behind the manic performer, and for all the fantastically disturbing characters he masterfully portrayed, here was a man who would never let his feelings get in the way of making everyone else smile around him.

I interviewed him twice. The first time was in 2006, the year his family intervened and sent him back to rehab for substance abuse and alcoholism.

But here in front of me was a man who knew what people wanted him to be as he promoted the family animation Happy Feet - a film where once again he was encouraged to wander off-script and be himself.

Robin Williams Williams struggled to deal with his depression and addiction

You always feel like with many of his films he would probably open the screenplay and it would simply say "Just be Robin Williams" rather than give him actual lines.

And boy did he perform. In my four-minute slot he crammed in some singing, some talk about chocolate bars and naturally, a small slip into his Mrs Doubtfire voice, a sure-fire crowd-pleaser.

But he was also happy to talk about himself. Never one to shy away from personal enquiries, he offered comforting words that he was "getting better" and he always seemed genuinely pleased that you'd asked.

Our second encounter, four years later, was longer, warmer, and, due to the film he was promoting, steeped in darkness of "the other Robin Williams".

Comedians Robin Williams (R), Billy Crystal (L) and Whoopi Goldberg share a hug on the stage of New .. Williams with his friends Billy Crystal and Whoopi Goldberg

I decided I loved the film World's Greatest Dad within minutes of the opening credits (if it passed you by, I implore you to go and seek it out).

Deliciously dark, playful and unnerving. A return to the Williams of Insomnia and One Hour Photo. You could tell Williams was proud of it too, a labour of love created by his friend and Police Academy star Bobcat Goldthwait.

I was running a few minutes late for my interview. Williams found this amusing and told me off himself.

I pointed out that anyone going to see this film expecting the man they'd loved in Mrs Doubtfire might be a little disturbed. He smiled and seemed to relish that opportunity as an actor to not always be the person people were expecting you to be.

Unusually for a Hollywood interview, we were issued no guidelines on "personal questions" which left a revealing pathway for Williams to talk openly about his recent heart surgery, and ongoing problems battling his addiction problems. That film dealt with family suicide.

Actor Robin Williams Williams voiced a penguin in Happy Feet

A clip with Williams reading the line, "Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem" has now taken on new heartbreaking pathos.

He was a warm man to speak to, quiet, humble and overflowing with ideas. Ideas that didn't always pay off, with some less than memorable efforts like Toys or Being Human. But as much as this job takes you close to these icons, it is impossible to fathom what is really lurking behind those engaging eyes.

His agent's revelation that Williams had recently returned to his 12-step rehab programme and was suffering from severe depression only drives home the point that celebrities are only people like you or I, mental illness doesn't distinguish between the successful, the rich or the poor.

Robin Williams

The person I spent 15 minutes with in total is just that - a person with all the weight that goes hand in hairy hand.

But Williams knew life was about entertaining. And he leaves a performance for everybody.

The man-boy genius of Mork And Mindy, the big budget effects of family adventure Jumanji, the emotive Oscar-winning introspection of Good Will Hunting, or that damaged loneliness of World's Greatest Dad - plus thousands of stand-up shows and interviews where he would literally challenge himself to never shut-up.

It's that silence now that will make us all miss him the most.

Fugitive Drug Dealer To Be Extradited To UK

Written By Unknown on Senin, 11 Agustus 2014 | 22.55

One of Britain's most wanted men is to be extradited to the UK after being arrested in South Africa.

Convicted cocaine smuggler and fraudster Martin Evans was jailed for 21 years in 2006 for conspiracy to supply cocaine.

But he went on the run three years ago when he failed to return from his day release at a Wiltshire prison.

The global drug trafficker was captured by South African authorities earlier this month in a joint operation with Britain's National Crime Agency (NCA) and Interpol.

Martin Evans, who has been on the run since 2011, has been caught in South Africa. A mugshot of Evans

Armed officers swooped on Evans as he was getting out of his car in Johannesburg, bringing an end to an international manhunt.

Evans appeared before Randburg Magistrates Court in Johannesburg on Monday morning and told the presiding judge he would not be opposing extradition.

The 52-year-old from Pontardulais, was once an award-winning businessman and ran a successful double-glazing firm in Port Talbot, but it collapsed.

Evans turned to fraud, cheating investors in a new ostrich farm business out of hundreds of thousands of pounds.

Much of the money was channelled into offshore accounts in Jersey and the Bahamas and Evans was known to have a £2m villa in Marbella, and other properties in Miami and Florida.

Shortly before his trial for fraud, Evans went on the run for the first time, to Spain and then to Holland.

The NCA said it was while he was a fugitive that he masterminded a multimillion-pound drugs and money laundering operation - supplying huge quantities of cocaine and MDMA between 1999 and 2001.

Evans was caught when he tried to use a false passport to enter the US in November 2001.

He went on the run for a second time when he was released on a temporary licence to an address in Swansea in August 2011.

NCA detectives, who alerted Interpol to his whereabouts in Johannesburg, described his recapture as "a real scalp".
