Jewel Thieves In Paris Smash-And-Grab Raid

A group of thieves have stolen a handbag containing €5m (£3.6m) worth of Chanel jewels from a woman on the road between Paris and Charles De Gaulle airport.

The daring robbery of the Taiwanese art collector happened on Wednesday as the taxi she was travelling in was driving through a long tunnel notorious for robbery attacks on tourists stuck in traffic.

The thieves smashed the car window and snatched the bag.

It is not known at this stage whether or not the thieves were just lucky or knew in advance that there were valuable objects in the bag, including a ring said to be worth €1.7m (£1.2m).

Police say they are keeping an open mind as they investigate the theft of the gems which were to be presented at the Paris Museum of Modern Art, a source said.

Migrants Held For Throwing Others Overboard

By Enda Brady, Sky Correspondent, in Trapani

Italian police have arrested 15 migrants for allegedly throwing others overboard following a shipwreck in the Mediterranean.

The Italian coast guard has said migrants have been arriving at an unprecedented rate since Friday, with 10,000 pulled from rickety vessels at sea and another 400 people drowned off Libya.

Police say the African Muslim migrants were held after witnesses said they had thrown 12 Christian passengers into the sea after a brawl on a boat heading to Italy.

One of the thousands of migrants rescued from the Mediterranean in recent days has told Sky News of his relief at finally reaching Europe after months of travel.

"It's like jumping from fire onto beautiful dry land," Ebrima Jaiteh said after landing in the Sicilian port of Trapani.

Mr Jaiteh, who said he plans to stay in Italy, learn the language and find work, said he was smiling for the first time in a year after completing the arduous journey

"The journey was hell," he said. "I have been travelling non-stop for months, through many dangerous countries.

"In Tripoli they treated us like animals. They beat us. They shouted at us. They took all our money.

"No human being should have to go through this. I thank God we made it. Many of my friends in different boats did not."

"I am alive. Right now, that is all that matters. Many thousands more like me will come. I know they will because I travelled with them to Libya, where they wait for calm seas."

A further 41 migrants are feared drowned in a separate Mediterranean shipwreck, based on survivor accounts.

Four migrants picked up by the Italian Navy said their inflatable vessel sank not long after leaving the coast of Libya for Europe with 45 people on board.

Italy has pleaded for help from the other nations of the European Union to deal with the situation with many of the migrants, unlike Mr Jaiteh, not planning to stay in the country but move elsewhere across the continent.

Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni said: "90% of the cost of the patrol and sea rescue operations are falling on our shoulders, and we have not had an adequate response from the EU."

He told the Corriere della Sera newspaper that the EU was only contributing three million euros (£2.15m) a month on the Operation Triton sea patrols.

"And then there is the difficult issue of knowing where to send those rescued at sea - to the nearest port? To the country where their boat came from? The EU has to respond clearly to these questions," Mr Gentiloni said.

Under international law, the nearest vessel to an emergency must try to help those in danger, usually this falls to civilian ships such as ferries and cargo ships or the coast guard.

The European border agency vessels and aircraft in the area monitor the borders rather than save lives.

Mr Gentoloni also suggested that the EU had to tackle the reasons why people were leaving their homes in "Syria, the Horn of Africa and central Africa, to come to Europe in order address the problem.

Mum Relives Playground Kidnap Of Murdered Girl

The mother of a nine-year-old girl found murdered in France has told how she watched helplessly as a kidnapper drove off with the girl after snatching her from a playground.

The naked body of the child, who is being named in French media only as Chloe, was found in woods close to Calais less than two hours after the attack on Wednesday.

Prosecutors said there were signs she had been sexually assaulted and strangled.

A 38-year-old man from Poland, who was detained near the scene, has confessed to the attack.

Officials said he was planning to cross the Channel from Calais to England, where his sister lives.

He had been banned from France after serving time in prison for robbery, but had made it back into the country on Wednesday morning.

The girl's mother, named only as Isabelle, told Le Parisien newspaper how she had left the child playing with a friend in the playground for a few minutes while she popped into her home.

When she returned, the friend's grandfather told her: "Someone's taken Chloe."

She said she ran around the area looking for Chloe and then saw her daughter lying next to some bins.

Within seconds, Isabelle was screaming in horror as a man - who was described as bald and wearing sunglasses - suddenly grabbed the girl, shoved her in a red car and drove off.

"I saw her lying on the ground," Isabelle told the paper.

"And then a man I only saw from behind grabbed her and took her in the car.

"It happened too fast … I was paralysed.

"I shouted: 'Chloe's been taken'. I was in a panic.

"What I don't understand is if he had done something to her beforehand, because she did not cry out."

Officers were called at 3.30pm on Wednesday and by around 5pm, Chloe's lifeless body had been discovered.

Police found a red vehicle with Polish number plates nearby, and its driver - who was reported to be heavily under the influence of alcohol - was arrested.

Isabelle said she was "disgusted" that he had managed to get back into the country after being handed to Polish authorities last year after a Europe-wide arrest warrant was issued.

She said she "had not stopped crying" and is dreading having to explain to Chloe's younger brother and sister what had happened.

"I don't know how I'll recover," she said.

"Since this morning I've started to realise that I'll never see Chloe again."

One woman who was close to the playground told reporters she heard Chloe and her friend scream but only found out later that she had been abducted.

Later, while searching the area in the hope of helping police, she found a "little white shoe".

Tributes to the youngster described her as "cheerful" and "full of life".

One shocked mother told the AFP news agency: "It's horrific.

"My son knew her, he didn't sleep last night, he knows he will never see her again. I can't even imagine what the parents are going through."

France has been left in shock by the details of the girl's kidnapping and death, with flags flying at half-mast in the port town on Thursday and residents planning a march in her memory later in the day.

Family's Heartbreak As Student's Body Found

A body found near Glasgow is that of an Irish student who went missing after a night out, police have confirmed.

Karen Buckley, 24, was last seen in the early hours of Sunday morning after a night out with friends.

A family statement said parents John and Marian, along with Ms Buckley's three brothers, were "absolutely heartbroken".

John Buckley said: "Karen was our only daughter, cherished by her family and loved by her friends.

"She was an outgoing girl, who had travelled the world where she met lots of people, and thoroughly enjoyed her life.

"We will miss her terribly."

A statement from police in Glasgow said: "We cannot imagine the pain and suffering of Karen's family and friends and all our thoughts are with them at this very sad and distressing time."

Officers searching for Ms Buckley, from Cork, had earlier confirmed the discovery of remains close to Milngavie, in the north of the Glasgow.

A 21-year-old man has been arrested and is due to appear in court on Friday.

At around 1am on Sunday Ms Buckley told friends she was going to the toilet in the city's Sanctuary nightclub, but failed to return and left her jacket behind.

CCTV shows her leaving the club.

Her handbag was found on Tuesday in the city's Dawsholm Park, but on Wednesday the search shifted north of the city.

Dozens of officers began searching a remote country lane between Glasgow and Drymen, cordoning off the road to High Craigton Farm.

Ms Buckley began an occupational therapy degree at Glasgow Caledonian University in February and was previously a nurse at the Princess Alexandra hospital in Harlow, Essex.

In Ireland, hundreds of people have attended a mass at a church close to the Buckley family home in north Cork.

A candle and photograph of Ms Buckley have been left at the reception to the health sciences building where she studied at the University of Limerick.

A fundraising page set up by Ms Buckley's former classmates to cover her family's expenses in Scotland has raised tens of thousands of pounds.

Protester Attacks Draghi At News Conference

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 15 April 2015 | 22.55

The president of the European Central Bank has been interrupted at a news conference by a protester shouting "end ECB dictatorship".

Mario Draghi was outlining the bank's latest monetary policy thinking when a lone woman jumped onto the desk above Mr Draghi and showered him with items including what looked like confetti and sheets of paper.

The bank suspended the video feed of the news conference as security officials grabbed her but she flashed a V for victory sign and smiled as two men in grey suits took her away holding her arms and legs.

Mr Draghi, who had held up his hands as protection, looked shocked but was apparently unhurt and continued his presentation shortly afterwards.

It is not yet known who the woman was or what lay behind her protest but early speculation could focus on the renewed financial troubles in Greece, which is yet to secure additional bailout funds from its creditors, including the ECB.

A Russian biker gang loyal to President Vladimir Putin is planning to ride through Europe to mark the end of the Second World War, triggering anger in Poland.

Plans by the ultra-nationalistic Night Wolves motorcycle club to retrace the westward route taken by Soviet troops to Berlin have been branded a "provocation" by Warsaw.

The rally comes amid heightened tensions between Russia and the West over the crisis in Ukraine, which have fuelled fears of Moscow's wider territorial ambitions.

The two-week, 3,728 mile ride will pass through Belarus, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria and finish in the German capital on 9 May.

The biker gang's website states "To Berlin" - a reference to the Red Army's famous battle cry.

Three Guilty Of Gambler's 'Honeytrap' Death

Three people have been found guilty of the 'honeytrap' death of a professional poker player.

Kyrron Jackson, 28, and Nicholas Chandler, 29, were convicted by a jury of murdering Mehmet Hassan after Jackson's girlfriend Leonie-Marie Granger set the trap.

Care assistant Granger, 25, was found guilty of manslaughter for deliberately targeting the 56-year-old.

Granger had already pleaded guilty of robbery and was found guilty of false imprisonment. The jury found her not guilty of murder.

Chandler had to be restrained by court guards after he began lashing out as the verdicts were handed down.

The court heard how Granger went on dates with Mr Hassan and afterwards reported back that her target was "flashy".

A taxi driver overheard her saying: "This guy is a professional gambler. He has never worked a day in his life."

On the night of the murder, Mr Hassan took Granger to top Mayfair restaurant Nobu before going on to the Palm Beach Casino nearby, where he gave her £1,000 in cash to gamble with.

She was seen kissing the victim "passionately" and a poker supervisor felt compelled to tell the pair to "get a room".

Later he took her back to his Islington flat where she let in her boyfriend Jackson and his friend Chandler as she left to get into a taxi.

The two men used parcel tape to tie up Mr Hassan in his bedroom then kicked him to death and ransacked his home.

The killers were later filmed on Granger's mobile phone throwing wads of £50 notes in the air.

Mr Hassan was a regular at the Playboy Casino on Old Park Lane and the Palm Beach Casino in Berkeley Street, Mayfair, and sometimes won as much as £15,000 at a time.

Missing Student 'Left Man's Home In Early Hours'

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 14 April 2015 | 22.55

A man has told police a missing Glasgow student left his home in the early hours of Sunday.

Karen Buckley, 24, was seen on CCTV leaving the Sanctuary nightclub at around 1am in the city's West End with the man.

Officers tracked down the man, who told them Ms Buckley left his home in Dorchester Avenue at around 4am.

She has not been heard from since.

Detective Superintendent Jim Kerr told a news conference the man has given a full account of what happened and was not currently being regarded as a suspect but is "helping" with enquiries.

The detective said a handbag believed to be Ms Buckley's had been found in nearby Dawsholm Park shortly before he spoke to reporters.

Det Supt Kerr said her parents had told police it was typical for her not to use taxis and, as a result, it was possible she may have tried to walk home.

He appealed for anyone who had seen Ms Buckley - a Glasgow Caledonian University student from Cork in Ireland - to get in touch.

Her family have flown to Scotland from Ireland to help with the search.

Her mother, Marian, told the news conference: "We just want Karen home safely, we are desperate. She is our only daughter, we love her dearly.

"If anybody has any information please come forward, we would dearly appreciate it."

Ms Buckley's father, John, said: "If anybody is holding Karen, if anybody knows anything of her, please return her. Please let's have her back. We love her to bits."

Ms Buckley arrived at the club with friends at around 11.45pm on Saturday and at around 1am she told them she was going to the toilet.

But she failed to return and left her jacket at the club.

Det Supt Kerr emphasised that Ms Buckley was widely travelled and was "aware of how to take care of herself".

But her said it was "very out of character" for her not to return home.

Police also want to find out more about a grey car seen on the roads between Milngavie and Drymen, north of Glasgow, between 11am and 3pm on Monday.

A major search is under way in Glasgow, with police carrying out door-to-door inquiries and examining CCTV.

Ms Buckley is between 5ft and 5ft 2in with brown eyes and dark hair which had long black curly extensions in it.

She was last seen wearing a black jumpsuit, red high-heeled shoes and carrying a black handbag.

She speaks with an Irish accent.

Ms Buckley lives with three other students in a flat in Hill Street, Garnethill, Glasgow.

PM Promises 'Good Life' For 'Working People'

David Cameron has claimed the Conservatives are the "party of the working people" as he made pledges on homeownership, £5,000 of free childcare and an income tax-free minimum wage.

Launching the Tory manifesto, Mr Cameron repeatedly made offers to voters who worked hard and wanted to get on the "good life".

The manifesto set out measures for families from cradle to grave - identifying measures to help people over six stages of their lives.

Mr Cameron opened his speech by saying: "At the heart of this manifesto is a simple proposition. We are the party of working people, offering you security at every stage of your life."

He promised 30 hours of childcare for three and four-year-olds - five hours more than promised in Labour's manifesto yesterday - to help working parents.

He said if the party is returned to power, it will give 1.3 million families the chance to buy their housing association home at least a 20% discount.

Speaking at a university technical college in Swindon, Mr Cameron laid out his vision for a "property-owning democracy" echoing the phrases used in Margaret Thatcher's 1983 manifesto.

And he said the Conservatives would introduce a tax-free minimum wage, linking the minimum wage to the income tax personal allowance so the lowest paid would never have to pay tax.

He urged voters not to "waste the last five years" and let "Labour drag us back" to the past, and asked to be allowed to "finish the job".

Mr Cameron promised: "This buccaneering, world-beating, can-do country - we can do it all over again."

:: Full Coverage Of General Election 2015

:: All You Need To Know About Party Manifestos

:: Sky's Anushka Asthana On Five Things We've Learned From The Tory Manifesto

Among other measures included in the manifesto, which has the phrase "strong leadership, a clear economic plan, a better more secure future" on the cover, are:

:: Raising the personal allowance for tax to £12,500

:: Increasing the starting salary for the 40p rate to £50,000

:: No increase in income tax, VAT, National Insurance

:: Raising the inheritance tax threshold for family homes to £1m

:: Seven-day access to GP service

:: An annual £8bn boost for NHS funding

:: Repeal the Hunting Act

:: Increase state pension by at least 2.5% with a triple lock

:: 200,000 starter homes built

:: Committed to four-boat Trident nuclear deterrent

Mr Cameron's repeated pledges on a "good life" available to people in the UK prompted a question on whether he saw himself as the impoverished Tom and Barbara characters from the BBC sitcom, played by Felicity Kendal and Richard Briers, or the rich Margot and Jerry characters played by Penelope Keith and Paul Eddington.

To fund Right to Buy, the Conservatives would force councils to sell their most expensive properties when vacant - estimated to raise £4.5bn a year - and replace the properties sold.

However, the Housing Federation claims the cost to the taxpayer would be £5.8bn and 40 years of failure on house-building means the UK still does not have the homes needed.

Since Baroness Thatcher introduced Right to Buy in 1980, 1.88 million council properties have been sold - only 345,000 new social housing properties have been built.

As well as extending Right to Buy at a discount to housing association tenants, the party has promised a £1bn fund for building 400,000 new properties on brownfield sites.

Mr Cameron's claim that the Conservatives are the party for workers comes after Labour said it wanted to be seen as the fiscally responsible option for government.

:: Right To Buy: Your Questions Answered

:: Labour's Manifesto At A Glance

:: Conservative Manifesto At A Glance

Conservative activists gathered for the manifesto launch were shown a video called The Note.

The video refers to the missive left for the coalition by the outgoing Labour treasury minister Liam Byrne after the 2010 election. It said: "There is no money."

But Labour has claimed the Conservatives have failed to explain properly how their measures will be funded.

The Tories say some £1.4bn a year of the funding will come from reducing the tax relief on pensions for those earning more than £150,000. Mr Cameron said their track record showed they could deliver on their pledges.

Labour leader Ed Miliband said the Conservatives were "trying to fund Right to Buy on a bounced cheque".

Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg said the Right to Buy policy was unaffordable and did not help millions of people trying to get on to the property ladder.
