Shots Fired At Ukraine Airport As Troops Move In

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 15 April 2014 | 22.56

Shots have been fired at an airport in eastern Ukraine as troops are deployed to mount an "anti-terrorist operation" against separatists.

Heavy gunfire was heard from inside Kramatorsk air base after a crowd of pro-Russian locals approached the facility, which appeared to be under Ukrainian control.

Russian news channel Rossiya 24 is reporting 11 people have been killed in the clashes, while Ukraine's Prime Minister Oleksandr Turchynov said Ukrainian troops have taken control of the facility.

Meanwhile, Kiev said it had launched its anti-terror operation in another town in the east of the country, Slavyansk, where it has sent busloads of troops.

It comes after Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said Ukraine was on the verge of civil war.

"I will be brief: Ukraine is on the brink of civil war, it's frightening," he said.
